5 Broward men killed as small plane crashes en route to Bahamas
Five Broward County men were killed Saturday morning when a small plane carrying them to the Bahamas crashed in the Atlantic Ocean soon after taking off from Fort Lauderdale, officials said.

The twin-engine Piper Aztec was piloted by Glen A. Quackenbush, 35, of Plantation, said Petty Officer 1st Class Jennifer Johnson, a Coast Guard spokeswoman. The passengers were identified by the Coast Guard as Troy Taylor, Michael Gross, Michael Levofsky and Mark Santa, all of Broward. Officials did not have their hometowns or ages available Saturday night.

Johnson said there were no survivors.

Officials said the plane was bound for Andros Island, the largest and least-explored island in the Bahamas chain, and a popular destination among scuba divers, snorkelers and fishermen.

According to Kathleen Bergen, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, air traffic controllers lost radio contact with the aircraft about 15 minutes after its 9 a.m. takeoff from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport.
