Another great night for flying!

I just got power back after 19 hours of no fun. Winds were gusting to about 50 knts here - some siding was ripped off the side of my apartment building. My mom said that they reported some gusts at 70+ mph on the other side of the state. Earlier in the day, before the winds picked up, I had trouble walking in a straight line at this one spot on campus. Needless to say, I wasn't too eager to try to go up in a 172.

Ahh . . . . where are you?

Don't forget to add that it was snowing here today and that it'll be raining tomorrow...or maybe even 5 minutes from now the way the weather works here.

Worst part...180 kt headwind all the way home!:(

[/ QUOTE ]

Very cool. That would give me an average cruising speed in the C152 of -90kts!

Hmmm...now would I be looking for a FROM or a TO flag on the VOR?

I read today that in here in NYC the winds were 30-40mph, with gusts up to 60mph. Can commercial jets even operate in winds this high?

Since when did American airports start referring to the altimeter setting as QNH?

Would you need a vacation if you lived in Hawaii??

My dad and stepmom just moved to Kona (big island, western shore) in March--I'm headed there for Thanksgiving and will ask!

Kinda like when I worked at Disney World people would ask where I went for vacation. Truthful answer ANYWHERE but Disney, Universal or Sea World. Give me somewhere that the temperature isn't scorching, people aren't dragging their screaming kids from ride to ride like the world will end tomorrow, and no one bothers me. Sorry, got a little carried away there....

I lived and worked on Maui for 8 months after I retired from the Navy. After 8 years of living on Guam, I was getting island fever bad!!!! A lot of my friends couldn't wait to get back to the mainland for a few weeks. You just go a little crazy living on an island with no where to go.

And as a side note; the grass is always greener somewhere else. Here on the mainland I miss the warm temperatures and blue ocean of the islands; on Maui, I missed being able to jump in my truck and drive somewhere that takes more than two hours to get to.

On anthor note; all you WASP's out there, if you want to feel just a little what is like to be a minority, live on a small island and have your local friends call you a "good howley" so the other locals won't kick your ass.

All and all, I got along great with the locals but I knew I would never fit in or be called one of them, even if I lived there for most of my life.

Did you fly into DSM yesterday? Ill bet that was a blast. When I called IKVs AWOS over the phone it was 300 @ 37 G45. It might have even gotten stronger than that at one point.

Yeah, it was bad there. We did a 180 on the taxiway to park and wait for our release time (to put the wind in front of us, helps keep all the exhaust from going right up back our ass end), and the wind pushed us backwards and castered the nose wheel. Fun times...

Sure, you would need a vacation. I was stationed at Pearl Harbor for 3 years and when I wanted a break I would hop a flight to another island. I would trade the hustle and bustle of Waikiki/Oahu for the quiet times on the Big Island, Maui, or Kaui.

Speaking of Hawaii, I was in Maui (OGG) this past week and did a flight like the one in the Nov '03 AOPA Pilot article. I didn't know about the massive x-winds when I booked the flight since I didn't read the article until I was on the plane from the mainland. Winds were 20+ gusting to 30+ when I took off but were only 20kt or so right down the runway when I landed so no x-wind certificate for me. It was a great experience though!
