i wish we could just burn all the combat edge masks in a giant inferno. Talk about contract to the lowest bidder. Ive had mine since early 2009 and it has never fit me, regardless of how much the PRs tweak it. I test fit the mbu-12 or whatever the old style one was, and it fit like a glove

12/P was the older style grey mask. 5/P was the way old school Vietnam-era through the early 1990s mask that I had.

I actually really like the 20/P mask, although it definitely took a long time to get used to. The little flap under your lower lip was really uncomfortable initially.

I don't know why we ever got the CE/20P mask, as we didn't use and had no need for any of the other parts of the CE system. Maybe it was just becoming AF standard for masks...but I thought that was what the 12/P was...the standard mask.

The 5/P, with it's plastic frame assembly, would eventually hurt the bridge of your nose if you kept it on for long enough, just due to it's fit.

Yes, that is the reason. The Air Force went to the 20/P mask as the fleet standard. Even now that combat edge is completely gone from the Eagle community (it might be gone from the Viper, too, I don't know) the 20/P mask is still the standard. That's all they issue in UPT, too.

That little flap nearly made me puke on one occasion. Got stuck in the hammerhead waiting for an emergency T-1 to come in on an especially hot day. I was pouring sweat, which unknown to me was running down my chin and dripping in to the hanging mask. Finally got the word to proceed and when I swung the mask up to talk on the radio I got a nice shot of my own sweat from behind the flap. My IP was laughing about that halfway to CLL.

Had my wingman one day in Korea while we were working offshore down low near the ocean and in the typical Korean hazy and pollution-filled visibility WX manage to get himself airsick. During a turn while we were doing 3k ACM engagements (about all we had the viz for), he puked in his mask and dropped off one of the bayonets of his mask, and went NORDO obviously. I see him in a level duck turn and, not getting any response from him, accelerate inside his turn to form up on him. He's alright, giving me the NORDO hand signal, but it's obviously a knock it off and RTB. I have him lead back so he doesn't have to bother with formation flying, and see him fiddling in the cockpit. Im in close formation, right at about 3 feet off his right wing. He tries to clear his 12/P mask by flipping the EMERGENCY position of his oxygen regulator, and all I see is one second nothing....then the next second, a large glob of puke shoot out of his mask and into his face and all over the front of his helmet. He then sheepishly looks over at me with puke all over his face, and gives the hand-across-mask signal again for NORDO/transmit. I couldn't stop laughing and wish I had a camera at the time. Im glad it took a bit to get back to base, since I needed the time to regain my composure enough to resume sounding cool and attack-pilot-like on the radio when contacting Korean and U.S. ATC.

A big 2 on the sweat build up, after enough sweat baths I learned to turn it upside down first
