It's been on constant ring the last few days, it's pretty much in DND except for a very select few people.

"I"m pooping"

Just go full LBJ and keep crapping while carrying on the conversation. Throw in a few flushes for good measure.

I know few guys that have a personal 12 hour rule even just after 1.

It's not crazy. I enjoy my pale ales and IPA's and/or some good bourbon, but I won't drink the day before a trip starts and I use the 12 hour rule as well.

(And not the 12 hour credit to cash switch)

One has to think if having an alcoholic beverage or more, is worth the potential problems it could cause having it before a flight period, whether 8 hours or 12 hours or even more. Safest time to drink, is on your time off. It's just not worth risking the career over; lots of potential problems, all because of wanting the extra beer or mixed drink. Sad that it is this way in the current day, but that's where we are today.

USN/USMC is 12 hours "bottle to brief" (and/or flight planning), so there is that. You airline guys are cowboys @ 8 hours :)

Yeah but you've also got guys taking breathalizers to assume bridge watch/COG/etc (which is both brilliant and ridiculous at the same time).

maybe we have a "problem" :)

seriously though, that is just one of the stakes that has been driven into the coffin of the Navy in the last few years….

If I cheated on my wife and got caught would everyone's first reaction be I hope he gets the help he needs?
If you cheating on your wife was a symptom of some kind of dependency then maybe it wouldn't be the first reaction but it would be a reaction, yes.

We can be mad at this guy and still hope that he heals, that's okay.

Lol, depends, do you have a sexual addiction? Let's start there.

So the breathalyzer wasn't up to spec or he's one of the luckiest guys on earth.

It's far more common than most people realize.

There is no science in fighting a DUI, you were drunk deal with it. The science the DUI defense is built around is finding some clerical or admin error tossing out evidence required for the trial/case to go forward.

DUI lawyers charge a premium for it because they can and it keeps their mortgage paid, not because it's hard.

If you've got 10k and didn't kill anybody, you can probably get out of any DUI. Paperwork on the breathalyzer gets lost, somebody didn't initial a block signing for it, officer did X and Y but forgot Z explaining something to you.... there are tons of ways to pull that card.

Well while we were all busy sharpening our pitchforks and lighting torches. Or revving up the bus ready to run the pilot over.

It seems the highly accurate blood test didn't detect any alcohol in the pilots blood.

Considering nothing went to trail the administrative functions of the procedures were never under the spotlight.

He simply didn't have any booze in his system. The only issue I'm seeing is that the test was 4 hrs late. Not sure if that is meaningful.

Givin 4+ hours it's entirely possible to process what would be a legal limit violation .08 out of a body's system depending on youth/metabolism/etc.

The only time I've seen a truly effective use of blood screening was at holiday checkpoints where they were administered by a magistrates order for failing to comply with a breathalyzer. Judge sits in a van wth a court clerk, guy doesn't want to blow after tying a few too many on and not getting an Uber, data is entered and signed, EMT performs the blood test. Works great last a long time.

I don't know the guy or the situation so don't think I'm just ready to burn him at the stake. I'm just pointing out the multitude of ways that a DUI case can be, "beaten."

Good that he got cleared, but what a bunch of pain to have to go through, just to get so. Hence my position of just avoiding being anywhere near to something like this.

Why have to wonder in the morning "..I'm pretty sure i'm below .08, as I only had X drinks last night, and that was 10 hours ago..."

Vice just avoiding it, and knowing for sure that you're good to go and nowhere remotely near any limits. I know that kind of sucks, but the way things are today of anyone and everyone seemingly looking at any pilot as being "possibly drunk", it's not worth betting the career, just to be able to enjoy some drinks. I wish it wasn't that way, but that seems to be the situation pilots have been put in (and some pilots have placed us in) in the modern day.

Protect your career. You worked hard for it.
