Amusing, but sad, time-building pitch

Unfortunately, as some have said, this "deal" is not original. I had someone send me something similar the other day.

PIC Twin time for around $100 an hour.

Here is the fine print that I had to dig out of them:

1. You must fly after 8 pm and have the plane back by 7 am.

2. You can fly anywhere in Florida.

3. You must fly with another person paying the same amount.

4. You will both (illegally) count the time as PIC time since one of you will be acting as a "safety pilot".

Who in the world started this "time building" crap anyway?

Joe

Who says you can't get nothing for free in aviation!

I personally have flown with this company. I was just as skeptical as anyone else about sending money up front but i had been out of the game for a bit and the deals they have are pretty hard to pass up. I wasnt able to afford any of those big chunks of time and the smallest he would allow at the time was 50 hours so thats what i did. Went out of fxe all the way to california and back. The owner was actually a pretty cool guy. Just seemed like he was tired of the schools that ripped people off with their prices. He said he was going with walmarts type of philosophy, a lot for a little vs a little for a lot. Idk, a lot of you guys are just negitive and cynical about everything in life but this actually worked out for me.

Might've been a great tactic a couple of years ago, back when people were hired with 400 hours. These days? A hundred hours of block time is a drop in the bucket, and will not do anything for you other than make you a little poorer.

As far as him having some kind of inside scoop at Colgan, GMAFB...

:yeahthat: The part that I think is the funniest is that he's pretty much asking for $9,600 up front but didn't even take the time to proof read his own email. Also, using regional first year pay as a selling point doesn't make much sense.

Do the Math: Each month you don't fly for the airlines = $1800.00 per month x 12 = $21,600.00 per year. Can you afford not to fly with us?"

I think I threw up in my mouth a little.

Did Tom O'Dell take up a shot at aviation?

I would say they are being realistic. It's unfortunate, but it's how it is.

I would say not to confuse cynicism with realism. The people who say that are generally the ones who hate everything about life and always say "if things were done another way it would be so much better" and yet will complain when things are ever done that way and find something else to complain about.

And time building like this isn't necessarily meant for the guy who has 220 hrs and is looking for an airline job. How about the 3 year CFI who built 2200 hours of single time but only has like 16 hours of multi time. picking up 100-200 hours of multi in a month might not be the worst thing going...

No, but at the end of the month you still only have 100-200 hours. Better to get your MEI if you need multi time that badly... That way you can spend less money, maintain multi currency, get more time, and get paid.

I know what you're saying about cynicism, there's plenty of that around aviation. But there's also reality, and spending that much money for some multi time is just not going to be that beneficial right now. Just out of curiosity, what doors were opened for you once you did this? Were you able to get a better job?

Exactly. I have 1170TT with only 20 multi. If I had an extra $9600 in the bank I'd spend only a fraction of it and get my MEI and then hopefully get paid instead of wasting all of it on time building and probably still not finding a job.

Good man. 100-200 multi will not magically get you a job anymore. It used to be that 100-200 hours of multi was considered a strong amount for regionals. Now if you don't have 1000, people don't look at you. Hell, I can't get a bite with significantly more than that, either.

Amazing!
And I was trying to GIVE turbojet time and reasonable pay away by bringing in a low time pilot as a SIC.

I should have advertised Citation time for the low, low cost of $50hr!

Why didn't I think of that?

Heck, you could probably charge for it! :)

That's because you weren't using the steak knives..

Rule number one:

Safety pilot CAN NOT be logged as CROSS COUNTRY time.

While I have my personal opinions on safety pilot time (namely that if allowed, it should be only loggable as SIC), the regs and FAA interpretation are extremely clear in how it can be logged.

Safety pilot time is only loggable when the flying pilot is under simulated instrument conditions. If the flight goes IMC, the safety pilot cannot log anything. The phases of flight where the flying pilot is flying visually (typically takeoff and landing), the safety pilot cannot log anything. Further, while the flying pilot taxis, the safety pilot cannot log anything. For most training aircraft equipped with both a Hobbs and tach time, the flying pilot will log the entire flight (say 3.1 Hobbs), and log only the time spent under the hood (say 2.6), the balance being either visual flight or ground ops (or if the flight went IMC, he would log actual). Thus, the safety pilot can only log 2.6, as PIC or SIC (though everyone logs PIC). I've seen way too many people log the entire thing (3.1 in this case) as PIC cross country, which you just can't do.
