AMR to Divest American Eagle

To the eagle guys: I feel your pain. You guys have it bad enough with the 8 year upgrades. Now you get to watch the flying you used to do get sold off one RFP at a time.

It's no secret that eagle's costs are one of the highest, if not the highest in the industry. I see nothing that can come of this but pain for the pilots of Eagle, and I sympathize.

Having a little bit of schadenfreude?? :)

Haha, I guess so - but just because the guy basically told several people to go to hell for suggesting that Eagle might be sold off.

I with the best for the rest of the Eagle pilots on here - hopefully it'll all work out for you guys.

I feel for you guys. I know it sucks to start again at the bottom of a senority list, but.... At least there are a s-ton of places out there hiring right now. I also don't think there are any senior guys on the board here.

I don't know much about the 121 move, but among other things, could this move potentially have to do with the publics (and governments) view on regional carriers, and the airspace and airport conghestions, and this is a way for AMR (American) to get out, and say we don't have anything to do with it if the hammer were to drop?

Doubt it.

My speculation is it has to do more with reducing the costs associated with Eagle as it's no secret their one of the highest in the regional busines and secondly, American needs the costs associated with Eagle lifted in order to update their fleet.

All about the bottom line.

Funny how everyone sees Eagle as a sinking ship since it's being spun off. Eagle had $2.3 billion in revenue last year. They have a huge fleet of modern planes. The CRJs and ERJs are fairly new. The Saabs are older...but they sip gas. The ATR's are the only "old" planes in the fleet. How many naysayers were around when Expressjet was spun off? Look at them now. With the number of pilots and planes in the fleet American Eagle could easily fly for another carrier. This will also free them up to buy more CRJ-700s without having to ask AMR's and APA's permission. This will allow Eagle to offer to fly more 700s for American just like AMR wants. Those choosing to cancel interviews are foolish. Eagle can easily grow from this.

The limit on how many 700's they're flying has to do with American scope as I understand it, so they will get no more 700's.

I think Eagle will be fine for a good 5-8 years after the IPO. AMR will do the same thing CAL did with ExpressJet - a guaranteed contract for X years. That will ensure a strong stock price for which AMR will then sell off in bits in pieces to raise money. Then, when they put Eagles flying up for bid, they won't lose any money choosing someone else.

The problem is that with no more flow thru promise, Eagles 6-8 year upgrade will mean folks hired recently and in the future will most likely never see the upgrade before Eagle starts having to bid for its future.

Actually, we had already been givent he go-ahead to pick up the additional 25 CRJ-700's with delivery to take place in 2009.

BUT....this might change things. Might not.

I don't know much more than what was posted as I was alerted about 30 minutes ago (thanks Seggy & Jtrain! :nana2:).

I'll have to do some digging, some interviewing....and get past "The Sky Is Falling!" that is inevitible after this announcement and THEN see what lies ahead.

As of right now - nobody knows.

That said, I think the only inaccurate statement made in this thread is that Eagle flies "outdated equipment". It's no more outdated than Xjet, PSA, Air Wisconsin, ASA, Skywest......any other regional out there.

Other than that, we most definitely do have staffing issues - which will continue.

If this kills the flow-through - that "8 year upgrade" thing may be the death knoll as there will be a mass exodus of pilots who have just waited too damned long to upgrade.

What that means for guys like me and crashemburn who are about 2 years into this.....is completely unknown.

Whatever the case, I'll keep my resume updated, keep sending it out and keep praying. Pretty much all I can do. The rest is up to someone else.

Thanks Kelvin. I'm not freaking out yet because I don't know enough about it to freak out. I think it's safe to say that nobody at the cockpit level does.....yet.

You may see me freak out later though, so stay tuned. ;)

You know, they might just spin it off and do a public offering of stock. If that's the case, then nobody's going to buy them up and there won't be any stapling of the seniority list.

Dude....should I cancel my interview at Eagle? The long upgrade time is already tough to swallow about a job prospect there, but if there's no hope its going to come down, I might be better off getting bent over by CJC and get my fourth stripe in a year or so.

Oh what to do.......

Remember: The "8 year upgrade" is based on the pilots who were hired before 9/11. Eagle didn't hire anyone for 3-4 years after 2001.

Once the 7-8 year pilots either upgrade....or leave....the upgrade time will fall to 3-4 years.

BUT....whether or not you should keep your Eagle interview - dunno.

We're not "going out of business". We're being divested. Which, of course, could lead to something very bad or something very good. Right now all we know is that we are being divested. Everything else - everything you read on this thread about the future of Eagle - is purely speculation based on other airlines experiences.

For now, I'm staying.

This just proves that the airline industry is one colossal crap shoot.

I'm not to worried about Eagle disappearing in the short term. We have about 300 airplanes that feed AA. That cannot just go away overnight. But for the long term I am worried. Just look at expressjet. Except with AMR at the plate I think it would be worse than lossing 69 airplanes. Also if they do sell us will the airplanes be part of the deal? Who knows. I have already been getting the old resume up to date and looking elsewhere, but its hard for me to make a lateral move. Besides some charter stuff no one else will give me the time of day without any PIC, which is still no where in sight at eagle. Only time will tell.
