NTSB: American Airlines mishandled plane data

Federal officials investigating an incident in which an American Airlines jet went off the end of a runway say the airline improperly downloaded information from the plane's flight recorder before turning it over to the government.
The National Transportation Safety Board called the download a violation of its standards, and barred American Airlines from further participation in the inquiry into Wednesday's incident at Wyoming's Jackson Hole Airport

So do you guys think it was an accident on American's part like a miscommunication or newbe or was it blatant disregard for the rules and they were tryin to cover something up.

It might be to early to call.

However, it's hard to explain that you "accidently" removed the FDR, flew it to Tulsa, and downloaded info!

I'm surprised the technician didn't raise an eyebrow on this one!

O.K. boss, let me get this straight. You want me to go out to the plane that's in the gravel off the end of the runway, the one that has CAUTION tape surrounding it, crawl inside, remove the FDR, put the FDR in a box and ship it off to Tulsa? Yeah, I'll get right on that one!

It doesn't even pass the common sense test..........

Did you even read the article? There was nothing fishy about them grabbing the FDR. They were SUPPOSED to. The little detour to Tulsa and what happened there was the problem.

Yeah I read the article. You can't just read something in the news and consider it to be "THE all knowing and informative source of information". There's more to the story here AND it doesn't pass the common sense test

So, please share the rest of the story with us.

Mx is allowed to remove the FDR and CVR, but have to turn the immediately over to the NTSB. I looked on the NTSB website and they actually have a FDR Handbook for Investigators.

3.6. The FDR unit shall not be tampered with or opened, and the recording medium shall not
be removed (i.e., the tape or memory module) until it reaches the recorder laboratory at
Safety Board headquarters in Washington, D.C.

3.7. The FDR shall not be read out or downloaded on scene. The IIC shall caution the parties
to the investigation that unauthorized readout or download of an FDR, following a
reportable NTSB accident or incident, may result in loss of party status (refer to section
4 – FDR Data: Non-Safety Board FDR Download).

American basically got booted as party to the investigation; which means that no information from the NTSB will be shared until after the investigation is complete.

The FDR and/or CVR are supposed to be removed (or if located in a crash, moved) only under direct supervision of a NTSB member (or thier designate and the designate is rarely, if ever the airline involved in the incident/accident). Then it is to remain under custody and/or control of the NTSB until it's return or destruction following a final report. So, unless the technician removed it with the NTSB right there, then snuck it out of view of the NTSB rep, THEN sent it to Tulsa, they are NOT supposed to remove it........hence more to the story

tfaudree_erau: so curiosity finally got the best of me and I had to look up what your avatar meant lol. That really is an unusual story n
