American and Eagle having a bad day.

flyover

Woke up to the news this morning that American and Eagle had been hard down for about three hours due to computer problems. They said the dispatch computers couldn't communicate to ATC to file flight plans. Ouch. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif

The only problem is that sometimes when the systems go out, the dispatchers cannot perform 'flight tracking' which is required under part-121.

Our systems had a melt down the week before we won some award for I.T. at Delta, and I offered to crank out a flight plan, file it and fax the dispatcher manual WDR/AWABS, but she wasn't able to flight track us.

Can you imagine it - in the pilot lounge, pilots sitting in 2's with their plotters, E6B's, numerous charts, doing their flight planning!!!

Does Delta have a specific procedure that says that dispatchers have to track the flights with that specific computer system? Legally, a dispatcher can track flights using a jet planning chart, push pens, magic marker and stop watch!!!

Then again, I've never worked in the "real world" of dispatch.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No idea. However in the airline biz, there's a fine line between 'legally required' and 'willing to put up with'.

I think a lot of guys would just melt into goo. It was tough to re-teach myself the E6B after my IR training, and it had only been a year since my PPL checkride. Imagine an airline pilot that hadn't used one in 7-10 years! Unless they pull it out enroute to keep current on it just in case. I have a feeling that any FO that did that would be laughed at, though. As far as flight tracking, couldn't they go back to the old ATC "shrimp boats?" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
