American Airlines

American is the Legacy at the top of my list and I keep hearing how their pilot group is stacked heavy with the 50+ age group. I imagine it would be one of the toughest interviews if they did hire off the street, but always worth a shot.

Just curious, what's the reason that it's your #1 pick?

On the Delta list there are '07 Delta hires senior to pre 9/11 NWA hires even though NWA was hiring at the same time in '07. Apparently that was fair?

There are a few reasons why the DAL/NWA list isn't DOH. There are also examples of fNWA guys ahead of fDAL guys who were hired later. What is fair? As an aside, where is "fair" defined in the ALPA merger policy? Apparently the arbitrator had his definition of "fair" and applied it. Our definition doesn't count. For better or worse, this is what we have.

AA just announced a big trans-Pacific partnership with JAL. There have been crazy "call" orders on the AMR stock as of late. Apparently folks are betting that AMR stock will go WAY up. (Assuming I read that right. I'm definitely no Wall Street guy.)

The deferral rate is still high for APA furloughed pilots. As it were most of the next pilots in line to be offered classes at AA these days are senior Eagle Captains that hold actual numbers on the APA seniority list. AA is taking 30 to 40 of our senior Captains a month and that's projected to continue until May. At least.

The stock Calls and stuff seem to be the most telling thing. People seem to be putting their money on the line that AMR is about to go gangbusters. I can only hope- that'd mean continued hiring and advancement for all of us in the rank and file.
Not really "way" up but usually high call volume is a bullish sign. I believe the May 12 Calls were most the most active.

Ahh. I appreciate the interpretation. I watch the stock price just as an indication of how AMR is doing overall. The news articles cued up made it seem as if the call volume was off the page, or so my uneducated eye would have believed.

Looking at the numbers, AA is one of the few places that will see a serious "Vietnam era pilots retiring" shortage, when the oldest guys start hitting 65. A lot of the TWA furloghees are not exactly young kids anymore, either.

My prediction, the next 5 years are going to be VERY eventful in this industry.

For aa as a company to even survive their retirements theyll have to hire just about every regional pilot out there over the next 10yrs..

Even the Asa/expressjet/skywest monstrosity is what, 5-6 thousand strong? Then you have aa alone with 11,000+ most of whom are out in the next decade

I want to say, just casually, that ASA has the oldest pilot group out of the cabbage patch.

Assuming AA doesn't downsize their fleet in the process. Also, don't forget that we'll have guys coming out of the military for some of those coveted major jobs.

AA is a great company. I've been hearing these ruminations of massive retirements there which is definitely good news. To be honest though my biggest problem with this new hiring spree is that I'm afraid of how long it will last. I'd rather see a steady hiring trend and consistent shortage that will give more incentive for better pay in the long run, instead of a sudden 12 to 18 month plundering of any pilot with a pulse followed by a Titanic collapse of the industy and people willing to do anything to fly.

I have read it. I still disagree with an '07 hire ahead of a '01 hire. For the most part they did a good job overall and that really is the standard in aviation....the lesser of the evils.
