American Airlines to charge fee for front-row seats

According to the seat reservation web pages of both SWA and JetBlue, they too are charging an extra fee for front rows and seats at emergency exits.

SWA doesn't have assigned seating and doesn't charge extra for front rows because there is no assigned seating. I'm not sure what you are reading on their reservation web page.

I fully agree. But instead of fees here and there, why not just come out and raise the ticket cost to what it really would likely be, rather than try to advertise a low ticket price....THEN put the fineprint fees onto it?

Don't get me wrong, I totally agree. I'd love to be able to say "$300 from here to there? SOLD!" then write a check for $300.

But consumers are pretty short-sighted for the most part.

How many people worked in a US-based "doohickey" plant in the US, but then when they went to MegaLowMart, purchase the cheapest "doohickey" on the shelf, but was produced in Shanghai instead of at his own factory.

Then he gets upset that his job disappeared because they're moving the "doohickey" factory to Shenzhen in order to compete with the "doohickey" produced in Shanghai? Lots.

We're both very familiar with Scottsdale! :) Now if Dr. A in Paradise Valley sells a "C" implants for $4,500 and Dr. B working out of his trailer in Buckeye sells "DD" implants for $3,000, our lady friend is doing to get the most value for her dollar.

BUT she didn't realize that she'll probably end up with a Staph infection ($$), epidermal scarring that needs to be fixed ($$$) and miss a few weeks of work ($$$$) to get all of the above done, all which is going to cost far more than $4,500 to get 'em done right the first time by Dr. A.

Marketers simply take advantage of American consumer's inability to make true comparative economic decisions.

Remember, we're still in the land of "$3.35 for an In-N-Out burger? Hell, BK's cheaper!"

Breast implants, hamburgers and airplanes in the same thread. Man I love my website! :)

I'll have to let my dad know that......he needs to come out of retirement!

I'm pretty sure they do charge for "pre-boarding". Since it is first come first serve... they charge extra for those that want to get on first.

We have a business select fare, and those people pay a little more and they get to board first and get a free cocktail among some other small stuff. But we don't actually charge for exit rows or the front row because as previously mentioned there is no assigned seating. :)

Ryanair is trying to charge for bathroom use. 1 euro. Wonder where the industry is headed...

That is terrible.

BUT! Considering the market, I've been to a lot of European bars and restaurants where I'm a paying customer and I have to give the old lady at the bottom of the stairs some pocket change before I go whizz.

Not ALL places, as you know, have that, but a lot it seems.

Yeah I know and it drives me nuts.
Ryanair has generally been abusing customers and crews but customers seem to accept pretty much everything as long as they save a buck or two.
So why would they keep from doing that ?
For instance, take Ryanair in Paris. Well, Paris, not quite. They use the Beauvais airport which is 50 mi away from the city. You have to take a bus to there. And they usually take off at like 3am. You didn't print your boarding pass ? That's bad. Well, they'll charge you like 5 euros for that. Oh and you paid with your credit card ? Yes, of course, that's the only way to pay. But we'll charge you 10 or 15 euros "credit card processing fees". Check luggage ? Sure ! 20 euros a pop. And it goes on and on and on. And the best ? To CHECK IN, they charge you 5 euros !!! And guess what, people don't mind !

SWA rules.....
I honestly didn't fly WN home from LAS yesterday just because of the seating thing. I thought, "Hmm...hop on a Mesa CRJ-900 and get a window or aisle...or be the last person on a Southwest 737 and slowly stroll down the aisle searching for the last middle seat as everyone stares at me...I'll go Mesa."

Then is it really Free? :dunno:

Ahh, even better is when the said old lady comes in and starts cleaning up the john while you are taking a whizz! (And doesn't skip a beat, that's the best part)

Sometimes I miss living in Europe........... Not often, but sometimes.

BUT...I know what I'm buying. No dumb fees stacked on top of one another. I'm paying the upfront cost for what I'm buying, and accept the fact that it's first-come, first-served. Show up and check in reasonably early enough, and finding any seat I want is never a problem. Tis the reason I fly SWA as much as possible over any other carrier, domestic. And thats when I HAVE to waste my time flying the airlines in the first place.

The Ryan Air event of paying for the toliet will be intresting. I don't know if it could work on this side of the pound. I think it could result in a huge civil law suit. Think about it, pregnant women pee's a lot (from what I heard) and the may not have money on them. Also someone who is airsick. I am not reaching into my pocket right before I "ralph" I'm holding my mouth.

I'll believe the Ryanair "toilet charge" when I see it. Their CEO has been spouting that crap for years. He likes attention.

You mean like the First Class Blowjob service he advertised for his new Trans-Atlantic start up? The German translator to the press didn't know how to translate that and his answer was:
"The Germans don't have a word for 'blowjob'? No wonder you guys were so angry."
You stay classy Ryanair.

It annoys the hell out of me that now since you are paying to check a bag, everyone and their brother is dragging all the crap on board and the FA's are yelling "please take your seats, we'd like to go now". Really? Maybe if you didn't force people to drag all their belongings onto the airplane then it wouldn't be a problem. I vote that prices go back the way they were and include all the "extras" that are tacked on now. It's called "cost of doing business".

Heck yeah!!

I never check bags, but now everybody brings on their giant dead body bags and halfway through the boarding everybody left has to have their bags taken and put in the back to be picked up at baggage claim...connecting flight? TOO BAD! Pleasure flying has become a harsh experience.

Correction: American Airlines seat fee story (AP)

(a correction to the story, from NewsBot)

AP - In a story Aug. 19 about American Airlines new seat fees, The Associated Press reported erroneously that elite frequent fliers can reserve the first few rows of coach for no charge. Elite fliers have access to other preferred seats without a fee but must pay $19 to $39 for so-called "Express Seats" in coach.

And to add one other thought...does anyone wonder why it takes 284 minutes to get through TSA? Maybe because of checking bags, everyone has to carry bags onto the plane...and the idiots don't understand that the conveyor belt can't "reach out" and grab your bag and drag it into the xray machine. People are dolts!!! Again, if you can't afford to pay $300 bucks then I invite you to take the bus. I would LOVE to fly on Pan Am again w/ fine china, silverware and yes...stewaredesesssesss.

I think the gal who has "faith" in Firebird's post should be my stewardess too. She can wear exactly what she is wearing in the pic.

Report: FAA set to hit American with huge penalty (AP)

(the REAL reason that American is now charging this fee!)

AP - A published report says federal officials are ready to hit American Airlines with a record penalty of $25 million or more for maintenance shortcomings that led to thousands of canceled flights in 2008.
