I figured that the extra crewmembers were deadheads.

I had something similar happen in the Jetstream. We were on the ground though, so it didn't make the news.

At AMR any deadheaders will show up on the crew list, so if the press got hold of a crew list, they would have seen 5 crew if there were two deadheaders.
