America West / US Airways Merger... Problem?

*** IF *** they merge, how will the pilot seniority lists be handled? Will tlhey go by date of hire? Considering the most junior US Airways pilot currently is a 1988 hire, won't that really be bad for AmWest pilots if the seniority lists are merged by DOH ?

Since both airlines are ALPA carriers there will be some kind of compromise worked out between the two groups. They are rarely straight DOH. Then the new seniority list will be litigated for the rest of everyones natural lives. As far as I know a seniority list integration between ALPA carriers has never been over-turned by a judge.

It depends if it's a merger or an acquisition.

There's usually only three people that are at least slightly happy in the case of a merger.

The #1 pilot on the seniority list (the #2 guy thinks he got his life ruined by the #1 guy), and the two CEOs which will have a few zillion stock options showered on their desk.

[/ QUOTE ]I don't think there has ever been a seniority list integration that didn't turn into WWIII between the pilot groups. At NWA, there's still whining about the the Republic merger, and that happened, what?, 20 years ago?

Yeah, I just ran into an old friend the other day. He is still pissed. He has to watch guys much junior to him fly international widebody captain, which he can never hold during his career at NWA. After a few decades you either get over it or get really really bitter.

There's probably a few flight attendants that are still complaining about the C&S merger!

Don't forget that Airways still has PLENTY of pilots furloughed. If this deal does go down, you can bet that quite a few America West newbies will be on the furlough list.

It'll be ugly, as usual.

I totally forgot about that aspect of it. If it's a merger they'll have to follow the M&A guidelines from the pilot working agreement. I haven't read either nor do I know any of the specifics of either carrier, but considering USAir's largest jet is the A330 and AWA's largest is the 75, it could get very nasty if they start merging based on career projection.

I think Doug Parker is going to have a revolt on his hands if it's not handled very careful.

This could be very interesting as US Air is in bankruptcy court, who is to say that if the unions do not play nice, US Air Contracts get torn up by the Bankruptcy courts. Either way, could be a battle on their hands.

Sadly, the U unions have already played MORE than nice, and they're still taking it up the jetpipe.
