Amelia Earhart

I need all the credit I can get! ROTFL! My brain is so out to lunch since I have been sick. Way more than usual anyways....which is a lot!!!

Not the exact interview I was thinking of, but she mentions her "first ocean crossing" in the vid at the top of the page-

Yeah, that was "really compelling" alright, making a small turn into some clouds for a few seconds and "losing visibility". SCAREY!!!

I wanna see her just sit in a Cajun Clipper, take a glance at the instruments, scream and then faint. THAT would be a video.

I met her at ASE on an overnight. I was lucky enough to be seated next to her at a breakfast place. We wound up going on a bike ride together and I took her out for dinner.

Small world...

She was cool excited about aviation etc. kinda dig her style...
I am sure she is nice and all.........did you happen to inquire about her name and any connection to THE Amelia?

Looks like lots of folks here are being unusually tough on a newly minted PPL who's just out on her first long X-Country flight with her CFI. Is it because of the publicity, or the name? I sure hope there aren't any new PPL's who happen to be named Chuck Yeager.

I get concerned when a low-time pilot is planning a trans-ocean trip and has to have point of no return explained to her. Or him.

Her point of no return must be the intersection of I-25 and I-70 :eek2:

Not trying to be mean spirited, more of a poking fun kind of thing. The coverage of a simple flight was so over the top it was laughable. Every night the week before, every night during the trip, three days afterwards. Updates at each newscast, and links to the blog all over the stations website. We get, she has the same name as someone famous and she flew a plane.

If she got the tv station to pay for the trip, great for her, the coverage would likely be a good trade for the flight.

This is what she has stated about her name from what I can find on the web: Her Mother gave her the name. She and the legendary Erhart share a common ancestry on her Father's side back in the 1700s. This is the only connection to the aviatrix and she described the relationship as "very distant" and forged by common ancestry and a shared surname.

It seems to me that she is using her name to gain as much press and notoriety as she can for herself and frankly, I don't view this as something spectacular. What exactly is the big hoohaa about flying coast to coast in a Cirrus with a CFI to begin with? Today, I read that she plans to fly the Cirrus around the world on the same flight path that the real Amelia took. Seriously? Talk about a marketing ploy. I might be impressed is she planned on accomplishing this in a Lockheed Electra 10A with the same exact radios and navigational equipment as AE did/had.

Oh wait, another woman aviator actually did just that in an Electra and dropped a wreath in memoriam over the location where Fred and Amelia were lost. Anne Pellegreno accomplished this trip in 1967!

Sorry, I am not trying to be a crap head here but what exactly are we supposed to be impressed here with? Her PR and marketing skills? Maybe someone with a very, very distant relationship to Lindy going back a few centuries, should get in a modern aircraft and recreate his flight of the Spirit of St. Louis and start a blog about it.

If it were not for her name, who would even notice? What would be special or even interesting about any of this? I don't find this inspirational or meaningful. I find it it to be capitalizing/cashing in on the real Amelia Earhart and exploitng the real Amelia for her own personal means/gain. Next comes the book deal, I am betting.

It's not like she grew up with the dream of flying and wanted to fly even as a child or has anyone in her immediate family that is a pilot or anything. She didn't have pics of the real Amelia tacked up on her bedroom wall as a child and was inspired to take flying lessons as soon as possible, hang around aircraft and airports, talk about wanting to fly, read about flying, etc. No where on her blog or in any interview has she ever stated anything like this. However, she does state many times found on the net, that as an adult, she got tired of people asking her if she was a pilot too (again, because of her name) when she was not and had to answer them with a "no", and then much later on decided to take flight lessons. She states this in many interviews available on the net and in her blog. I see $$$

Doing something remarkable and unique on your own instead of trying to ride the coattails of another......that would be impressive.

The worst part for me is when she decided to have photo taken of herself in the Cirrus and "recreating" the photo that was taken of the real Amelia flying over Treasure Island, even down to the sepia tones.

Maybe it's just me, but I found this to be really tacky.
