Am I The Only Weird One Here??

Okay..it seems everything i do i relate to aviation, or i look to aviation to get me out of bad moods, slums, or just anything negative.

If for instance i have 3 tests to take in one day, i'll just say oh well at the end of the day i can go flying, or see some videos or pictures or something.

It just seems like anything..and EVERYTHING i do i somehow relate to aviation.

I mean i still live my life and such..but if i'm in the car and i hear sound of jet engines, i gaze up to the sky to see what it is. I've even made it a habit so when i come home from school, i go ride my bike around this "path" that lets me watch departing planes from Ontario airport, and arriving planes into LAX.

Okay..end of rant..someone let me know if i just weird.:p

...sounds like you need to find the attention & affection of a women or a girl in your case!

No... I just come here and read all the stories about how much it sucks to fly for a living and get even more bummed out :nana2:

I don't think that's weird. I've pretty much been like that since I was 15 years old. Hasn't changed too much, really, and I have no regrets in that regard!

Thank god! For a minute there I thought you were going to take a perfect opportunity to recruit. Man that was too close!!!

I personally think it's very important to be a well rounded person with a lot of different interests.

Do I enjoy flying? Sure, of course I do. Otherwise, would I have dropped thousands of dollars into learning how to do it and would I plan on dropping several thousand more to get a job that will pay me about a third of what I'm making now?

But I've got other outlets that I enjoy just as much. Hell man, ask the folks who I dragged into the desert in Vegas how happy I was to be out in the middle of nowhere.

FINALLY SOMEONE IN AVIATION UNDERSTANDS THIS!

Thank God! People in aviation seem to be the most one-dimensional people I have ever met [not all, some].

It's funny to see people look at me weird and ask me "Why are you taking Italian? It's not required to graduate." and I respond "For the same reason I took AP Art History in HS?"

It's also funny to see people struggle when they have to take an elective and they determine that "none of those classes interest me" when there's a 100 page course catalog like there is here :whatever:

Tony, you made your way onto my invisible "respected users" list :nana2:

Not that I need to be on the respected list, but you've got to be well-rounded especially younger in life.

I was very focused on aviation when I was a lot younger and it may hav e helped my career, but at a pretty high personal cost.

I discovered, after high school and college, that I have a great thirst for history, computer science and philosophy, but I missed a lot of opportunities to study in an academic environment when I was too busy taking classes just to graduate.

There's a big, exciting world out there and you have love aviation and also have the ability to become more well-rounded and multi-faceted.

Amen. If I knew then what I know now...

You're not weird. You're just a dork! ;)

I'm probably in the same boat as Doug. Luckily, I had the opportunity to do some more "well-rounded" activities and studies in college and high school. Like taking French, studying World Music, studying Finance, getting interested in Art, wine tasting, and having the opportunity to explore and learn about many other cultures. I always had other interests, but aviation was the main one. I was really interested in flying, and wanted to make sure I learned as much as possible to try and get a step ahead. It did help out, I think, to get me where I am today. But I often wonder at what cost?

Now that I'm here, working full time as a pilot, I often wonder if the hard work was worth some things I missed in college. I seriously miss college so much, because it was a different life then. Many open ideas, cultures, backgrounds, and so much to learn. I really want to go back and learn more. Plus, there is so much I really wanted to do while I was young, that just isn't available now with this job. I can't just drop work for two months to go backpacking around Europe with a group of six close friends, or road trip around the US seeing the Nation.

I love my job and I love flying, and without this career there is a lot of things I would have not seen or done. It allows me the ability to travel when time and money permit, and for that I'm grateful. But there is so much more to life than airplanes. When you get to the airlines, you'll find that the last thing you'll want to talk about IN and airplane is airplanes. I've found the best trips I've had are with pilots that did other jobs or lived interesting places before starting this career. Those who went straight from a pilot factory or pilot college into the airlines seem to have a more tunnel vision towards flying.

I will always love flying. I love my job... I still get excited looking at cool pictures of airliners landing at sunset, and I still have a sense of pride when putting on my uniform. But it can't be the only thing in your life.

Speaking of, what percentage of pilots do you think are jimmy buffet fans?
I personally am not, but it seems like every pilot I know is...

I don't. There is nothing about college that I miss honestly.
