Am I the only confused one?

I would throw my resume out there to peeps but I don't feel like being laughed at. Being at 500/100, I'm still well below mins for everyone.

I am in the same boat you are in (400/100) and counting. Just wait a few months. the mins are coming down as our TT continues to go up. Tables are turning.

PILOT SHORTAGE WOOHOO!!!!!.......
ok that last part was just a jest

I'm not too hell bent on the airlines lowering the mins. I don't mind working my way up to them. By the time I meet the "mins" I'll be at 800/400 or 1000/600, depending who I want to apply to. I'm content with my new gig. Ain't no rush to take a pay cut and a QOL cut.

Doug said this before and he was right. No one was saying here comes the shortage in 2004 and 2005 everyone was whining about how 9/11 screwed us and no one will ever get hired. Then when it happened people really didn't notice till it was too late in early 2008, then the naysaying started again when things crashed. Just keep updated and keep sending it out, because by the time you realize its here its probably to late. Like riding the rollercoaster.

I get a lot of "Hey Doug, do you know anyone with XYZ experience" private messages and emails all the time about all sorts of opportunities.

Do not discount how often this happens! In my day job, I am frequently asked to recommend people for project work that I am totally unqualified to do. Recommendations like that carry more weight than just about anything else. When I'm asked to refer someone for a job, there is about a 99% that they will be the first choice. If my opinion didn't carry so much weight, I wouldn't have been asked in the first place.

I can't stress enough how important recommendations and word of mouth are. I spent six years earning six figures as a busy freelancer, and in that time had exactly zero work from unsolicited resumes or answering internet posts. Zero. I had more work than I knew what to do with, but all of it came from existing relationships with customers, headhunters, and referrals from colleagues. Once something is posted on the interwebs, it is generally because internal recommendations have all been used up. The best time to build those relationships is when you aren't looking for a job, BTW.

I agree 100%.

When you have a job is the best time to build relationships with people at companies you may want to work for in the future. I understand how completely unhelpful this comment is for people currently looking for work :-/ sorry

Everyday at the airport is like a mini job interview. When people know you will show up on time, every time, it puts you leaps and bounds above a name on a resume with double your experience. This is probably more for the 135/91 world but I’m sure it still applies..

I wouldn't really even call 2007-2008 a "shortage" unless you're talking about a shortage of experienced pilots willing to work for peanuts. If the airlines hadn't have been able to lower their minimums to wet ink and a pulse, they would have been in trouble. Once the did that, anyone with a loan for ATP was good to go in 90 days.

XJ did that... then was giving out bonuses for pilots to stay on longer. UPS was giving out bonuses also for pilots that signed a 5 year contract. It was starting slowly, then between fuel/ the crashing economy/age 65 the house of cards fell... :(

Since you obviously have SJS you should know that at Mesaba they fly props!

It's like a DC-9-15, but at half the pay! That's where I want to be.

Am I the odd one out that would rather fly a turbo prop instead of a jet? I don't know, the jet routes are too long for me. I prefer short hops.

Of course I say that now. The day I do 15 LAX-SAN hops, I'll march to the beat of a different drum.

Turboprops are fun, I wish I was flying one right now. But if its not a turboprop, I want to do about 2 legs a day.

I'll do 3 round trips on IAD-CHO-IAD all day long, over HPN or BGM out of IAD.

For turboprops, have fun, but keep in mind some employers ask for jet time only. For example, if you're thinking overseas (think Emirates) you won't even be looked at since their mins are specific to jet time.
