Alternative text messaging applications

CFI A&P

Exploring the world one toilet at a time.
iMessage has done well for me while I am traveling out of the country, the only downside is that not everyone that I communicate with is on an Apple device. So it appears I need some education on this subject. I understand that the principle element of all these apps is WiFi and both the sender and recipient must use the same app.

WhatsApp, CyberDust, Wickr, etc....

Which ones are you using and why?

I use google voice myself. I use it to text cell phones who aren't on an apple device. They don't have to have an app or Google voice. they just use their normal cell phone number to answer back to my google voice number.

Any fees with that? Google Voice has treated me well with transcribed voicemail. Makes it easy to shoot a "hey, I see you called. I'm on a trip and I'll call you back when I return".

Not sure if it is an option. But I have used it before for extended trips abroad and if I ever get a job which requires a lot of international travel ( and no company cell phone) T-Mobile has a a great $50 a month plan with unlimited data and SMS in the U.S. and in most countries in the world. Worked great for me not having to worry about apps, wifi or limits. Just text the old fashion way. Even had pretty low rates for U.S. calls. Something like .10-.20 cents a minute from China to the U.S.

If you will be traveling abroad often it is an option.

Seriously? I get transcribed vmails from crew scheduling that read like this (I'm I seriously got this a few months back)..."Hey Joseph this is Wendy in crew scheduling. I'm pope at the mail, just trying to tell all nighttime game...." and it goes on like that.

goSMS, if part of the goLauncher produects, it too asian girl bubbly for me.

I've never had to pay any fees associated with texting through google voice.

I used to pair google voice with Talkatone, to make VOIP phone calls outside the US. Hook up to the airport wifi, call the crew hotel, come pick us up or, call any local number in country or call back to the US. I haven't needed to pay anything to call Canada, Mexico or the US. But Google ended third-party access to google numbers so I'm out of a VOIP solution and looking for a new one.

Texting to a normal cell phone number still works.

I used to use Google Voice but stopped because it would randomly stop sending and receiving messages. I use whatsapp now and it seems to be pretty reliable.

Whatsapp. Almost everyone here in Europe uses it instead of actually sending text messages. Works great and rarely any down time.
