Alpha Flying/Planesense

You think this is more of a stepping stone indicator or something else?
It's just people moving on with their careers.....like I've said, it's not a bad place to work, but as of RIGHT NOW, it's not a career job. That may change if there is another type added to the fleet.v

I just got the "no thanks" e-mail. I didn't really expect anything from my application since I was short of the mins.

Agreed. I could even see it becoming a Career place with a payscale and perhaps a few additional bases. So, keep up the hard work on that! Good luck, we're all counting on you.

I have not combed through this entire thread, so this may have been posted; however I feel it is something that is very important to know if you are interested in working there.

A friend of mine applied about 9-10 months and subsequently received a job offer. He chose not to accept the job, among other reasons, because one of the conditions of employment was that if you left, you could not accept a pilot job at another company for 6 months. He tried to get them to budge on this, but the company would not.

It's possible that it has changed, but I would make sure you ask this question if you are serious with this company.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. And just how do they think they can or will control what your next job consists of? Get real.

Can anyone confirm this? I've never heard of a company requiring this.

Yeah, that's not even close to true.

edit to add: I've only been with the company 7 months now, but I have NEVER heard of that kind of condition for any company. In fact it's a bit laughable that stuff like that gets around and people believe it.

That's hilarious that you'd decline accepting a job for that reason, even if it was stated. But no, they don't require that, they only "require" that you stay for ~18months, and even that isn't enforceable.

they seem to be holding ground schools every other month with ~8 or so, but I think that's going to slow down

That is so inaccurate I'm not even sure how to respond. The only thing close to that is they say they don't want you to go to work for another PC-12 operator within a certain distance of your base within 6 months of you quitting, but I've known several people that have broken that without any repercussions.

I agree, we're trying to build towards 120 total pilots, and we're close to that now. Once we hit that number things will slow down, but there will always be some attrition.

So as they near the number of pilots they want, a new hire could expect to remain an FO for quite sometime, even with a merit based upgrade, correct?

The way things are currently going, I'd expect an upgrade within a year, all things considered. The only thing that might derail that is if people stop quitting for whatever reason.

I was speaking with the HR person in charge of pilot recruitment yesterday and she told me that right now there is approximately 100 pilots, and their goal is to have 130 for the start of the summer. There is a January class that is now full, and another scheduled for March. These two classes of 8 plus the November class that is underway would take us pretty close to that 130 number. I imagine that they will probably then start hiring into a pool, so they can run a May class at fairly short notice if there is some attrition.

Regarding the upgrade question, they select their upgrade candidates based on a number of different factors, seniority being one. During my groundschool they told us they like to maintain roughly a 60/40 ratio of PICs to SICs, and with the 50 or so FOs that have been here a year or less and the 24 more coming, clearly they are going to have to run a couple of upgrade classes if they want to maintain that ratio. For someone hired in the March class I would expect upgrade to take roughly 12-18 months, if attrition continues at its current rate.

I've heard AvantAir has a contract clause similar to what Norton describes. Perhaps an AvantAir employee will see this thread and chime in. Also, depending upon the state you're in, a company could pursue legal action against a former employee for breach of contract. If part of your terms of employment include not working for a competitor within x amount of time after cessation of employment, I can see how they'd have a case against you. Again, perhaps a legal guru will see this thread and chime in. That's about all I remember from business law back in college. Is it stupid? It doesn't matter to me. But the "enforceability" would if were I interested in the position.

At Alpha, it is one of the terms of your Memorandum of Agreement, along with the training bond. I do not believe that it is a contract, or that it is enforceable.

I don't see what the big deal here is? Why would you worry about leaving a job you haven't gotten yet? Planesense/Alpha flying looks like an awesome place to work. Great equipment, decent pay and schedules, the bases look alright, and I love that they will recognize a good employee not only based on the magical number that they hold at the company. Did I mention they have great equipment?!!?! That PC-12 is a rockin' bird. I look forward to the day when I can apply for a position with the company. Albeit that is a long ways away. :( But what do I know.... To each his own I guess.
