Well, 4 weeks in to the dispatcher program at Sheffield, and I have to say it is very intense. I am doing pretty good. I am learning alot, and I will definately be well prepared for a dispatch job when im done. I have been putting in about 5 hours a night after school studying, and it is paying off. I did real good on my adx test today, 93! I really studied hard for that. Anyways, I will be happy when im done and I can go back home to my kids!

Glad things are going well for you there. It's been a long time since I was at Sheffield but I know their course is very intense...I've also stayed in touch with one of the instructors there and I know he takes his job very seriously. Good luck finding a dispatch position once the course ends, and let us know how things go!

ha ha, I think I know who your talking about. I dont think anyone there has a sense of humor! But yes, it is very intense. This last week and a half will be very difficult. I hope I can make it through.

Congratulations!! I'm gearing up to head there for the June/July course. Are you going to be taking any of the ETOPS/EWINS/AIFP workshops?
Also, if I may... Do you stay the extra hour after class for review? I read that you're putting in about 5 hours a night... is that one of them? I hear that the instructors sometimes make themselves available during the weekends for review. Do you and/or any of your classmates initiate group study sessions, etc? I'd like to know what the post-lecture study environment is at Sheffield- from all accounts, the course itself is brutally intense and I'm curious to see how the study culture reflects this. Have you noticed that there are enough job openings out there in their placement program?

I have zero aviation experience so this is all new to me. The instructors are available after class, but it is up to you to seek them out for help. They will help you if asked. You might want to start studying for the ADX now before you get there, as you will need all the time possible to just concentrate on the class material instead of trying to study for both the adx and class stuff. Trust me, you will need all the time possible, and I am not joking! The school has been a mostly positive experience for me. As with any school, there are good and not so good things, but I will leave that up for you to decide on your own when you get here. In order to pass the course, you will need to keep at least a 70% average on all your tests. I am doing ok right now. I have done good on a few of the tests and not so good on a few, but I think I will make it through. The tests are HARD!!!!

No, I am staying in one of their houses on 70th terrace. Nice house, crappy bed though. lol Looking forward to sleeping in my own bed! We are hitting the flight plans finally this week. It is pretty daunting to think that we will have to be tested on this for the faa next week. We are all pretty overwhelmed in our class by how much detail there is.

When I was there we lost a few people due to attrition (and/or other personal reasons). I thought I would have been one of them but after week 2 I got the hang of it and enjoyed it alot more. You still have a lot of people left with you? how is Eric Katja and Brett and Jordan?

On the subject of detail, I asked Eric if we could bring voice recorders or use laptops during the lectures to help but he said some clown had tried to sell related media to another school in the past and that they are no longer allowed. Way to ruin it for everyone!

I also went to Sheffield about 13 years ago. Eric did my oral. The best advice I can give you is this. Only answer the question asked. If you do not understand what he is asking for ask him to rephrase it.
When you give him your answer, state it with authority. Whether right or wrong. Don't second guess yourself. If you don't honestly know the answer but you can find it in the regs, then say so.
The biggest mistake most people make, including myself, is we answer the question and then second guess ourselves and start rambling on into oblivion.
They are not out to fail you.
Another thing you will learn from this is, when you do start dispatching and you have to defend why you made the choice you did. Trust me it will happen to you in the career. You will be able to justify your actions.
Here is a simple test that I was shown for dispatching.
1. Is it legal? That is all the feds care about - period! Did you follow the FAR's and OPSPEC's. They don't care about company rules.
2. Is it safe? The way I see this, and again just my opinion, if it is legal it is safe. Another way to look at it is would you be willing to fly on the flight you dispatched?

I never said anything to you cause it was not an issue for me as I had back surgery a year ago, and any mattress other than my own would have been uncomfortable. A new one would not have made a difference. I am not a complainer, and I did not want to be one while I was there. I left that to the other person in the house that left(lol). If you recall, we very calmly let you know that our ac was out that last weekend we were there, and we were forced to live without it for a whole weekend, probably the most critical weekend. Did we complain? NO.
That being said, im glad i went to your school, and happy i didnt go to ifod.
