Allergies and 1st class medical

I know that Air Force health requirements prohibit anyone with allergies after age 12 to fly. Is it the same for a 1st class medical? I want to know so I can know whether or not it will be a waste of time to get a 1st class. I have seasonal and animal dander allergies and I take Zyrtec for them.

I have allergies and a first class medical.

Well, I'm also allergic to cat dander and we have three cats!

Yeah, and all of y'all 'decided' to be a pilot/be in the military and subject yourself to their medical exams!

Doug, I feel ya on the cat thing. I've been allergic to cats all my life and I have one (not as bad as three I guess). My future wife has horses and those just about kill me, but I can't say no to a good trail ride.

I develop an immunity to them after a few days. But if I'm gone for a week, I spent a few days wheezing and then it goes away.

I never knew I had a cat dander allergy until I left home and went to college!

Seriously, that really must be a handy thing to be able to do sometimes.

Yep, great for those times when you just absolutely have to write your name on a wall.

Yeah you can get a 1st class medical with allergies; and I've even got asthma to boot! I've got the regular seasonal (spring/fall mostly) sinus infection/allergies kinda crap going on, and I've got major cat allergies also. I'm on singulair for my asthma, and it's also being perscribed for allergies these days. If they don't like what you're on (and I'd check the AOPA list before you apply for your medical), then try to get on something similar that will work for you.

Oh, and if you're holding down a 3rd class right now; the 1st class is no different in the way the FAA treats this stuff. Either you can get them all, or they'll deny you outright for any medical.

I think Allegra and Claritin are both on the FAA's 'approved' list. I've taken Allegra for years, it works great.

As a claritin user, both that and allegra are on the approved list. But I think you have to "self-monitor" your reaction to it for 24 hours before resuming flight duties. At least that's what the chief pilot's secretary told me.

Which whoever knows what her source is/was!
