Doc,

I've come a long way in changing my lifestyle. I've incorporated a healthy diet and exercise routine, learned how to handle stress, decreased the amount of alcohol I put in my system, and I'm even wearing sunscreen. Smoking is last on my list (because it's the hardest!), and I've decided that now is the time to give it up.

I searched the forum for the latest info on Chantix and found some question of whether or not the FAA continues to give pilots their blessing regarding its use as a smoking cessation aid. I just wanted to get the latest information from you before I ask my family doctor for a prescription.

Are you impressed at all by its success rate? Do its users experience significant weight gain or face other health-related side-effects? If I were to take Chantix, would I be trading one addiction for another?

Thank you in advance!

The FAA approves of Chantix. They don't want you to fly until you are at the maintenance dose (1 week).

I have seen no one gain weight yet.

You are not trading one habit for another since you stop the Chantix after 3 months. It blocks the nicotine receptor in the brain and you just don't want to smoke anymore.

No weight gain, no other unhealthy habits, no desire to smoke (plus a week off of work). Sounds like a dream come true!

Thank you for your input.

If part of your smoking habit came from the need to have something in your hand/mouth, and you replace smoking with munching on "unhealthy) food, then you will probably gain weight, but it won't be from the Chantix. Most people do say they have to replace the habit with a different one, which is why many start chewing pens or biting nails. If you like crunchy veggies, like carrots, celery, cucumber sticks, try chewing on those instead. Good luck!

Thanks! Yeah, that's part of why I wanted to change my eating habits first - so I can have a better handle on whether I'm really hungry or just want a cigarette. You might want to look into buying stock in the chewing gum manufacturers, as I plan to keep them in business once I set a quit date. It'll be a drastic improvement in the way my breath smells, that's for sure!

"Insert joke about habit of putting something in your mouth here"

Hyuck hyuck!

:p

LMAO!!!!!

Actually..... you're not too far off from what my boyfriend suggested I should do every time I crave a cigarette. I'm sure it's purely out of his unselfish love for me and desire to see me succeed. How's that for replacing one habit for another? HAHA!

Geez, D, looks like you're giving up all your vices, except the best one! You go girl!!!! :nana2:
