Alec Baldwin: Booted from plane

You guys may want to check the regs. I think the prohibition on electronic devices is regulatory, and therefore applies to you every bit as much as a 121 airline. Do I think it's kind of silly? Yes. Do I brief it? Yes. It's the law.
Wait, let me google that for you.
§ 135.144 Portable electronic devices.

(a) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, no person may operate, nor may any operator or pilot in command of an aircraft allow the operation of, any portable electronic device on any of the following U.S.-registered civil aircraft operating under this part.
(b) Paragraph (a) of this section does not apply to—
(1) Portable voice recorders;
(2) Hearing aids;
(3) Heart pacemakers;
(4) Electric shavers; or
(5) Any other portable electronic device that the part 119 certificate holder has determined will not cause interference with the navigation or communication system of the aircraft on which it is to be used.
(c). The determination required by paragraph (b)(5) of this section shall be made by that part 119 certificate holder operating the aircraft on which the particular device is to be used.

Answer: Yep. In fact, that looks suspiciously like:
§ 121.306 Portable electronic devices.

Stupid or not, bottom line is, I'd he can't follow directions as to turning your phone off how can I expect him to do as I say when the shia hits the fan? I have zero tolerance for passengers who feel they can do as they please...I don't care if it joe blow or Eva mendes herself.

On a side note, I think if you have to be removed from a 121 flight for any reason besides W&B then you should have a 1 year ban on flying on another us airliner. See how fast that will fix them.

If It's Eva Mendes,then its cool.or she can sit up front with me.

Of course you'd expect them to be polite about it. The first three times. If the behavior I've seen in the cabin is any indication, the F/As generally show admirable restraint.

I do a lot of commuting, far too much.

I counted this morning and there were at least three different occasions where the cabin crew mentioned PEDs:

1. We're near to closing the door so start wrapping up that conversation or text message
2. Boarding is complete, please turn off your electronic devices.
3. The gate agent came down to thank everyone for the efficient boarding process, mentioned PED's and closed the door.

Still, the flight attendants had to ask a couple of passengers to turn off their PED's. One didn't and after three or four different mentions, and that we're at pushback time, I'm not sure I have a lot of sympathy for the guy if he had gotten barked at.

It's like petting a cat. The cat, when he's pretty much done with you petting him will give you a hint. Then another hint. Then it might growl. Then attempt to move and then ***CHOMP*** The cat's not being an ass, the cat was left with no other choice than to force you into compliance! :)

Air lining to one of our aircraft is hands down the worst part if my job.

Same here. I had to airline to get to a plane this past week and it's always a headache. I will compliment Airways this week though, both flights the crew were very courteous. They saw my crew tag on my suitcase when I was boarding, and both times we ended up making small talk. An FA even gave me some bottled water on my connecting flight after she found out I was on day 1 of work. Very friendly, very professional.

As dumb as it may sound though, I'm actually somewhat impressed that a guy like Alec Baldwin is airlining. If I could afford private aviation, I'd never step foot on an airliner again. Why would anyone want to ever deal with the BS that is the airlines and TSA

Believe it or not, that's 90-plus-percent of flight and inflight folks on ninety plus percent of segments.

They don't get articles written about them or coverage on CNN, because them doing their jobs isn't newsworthy unless someone famous gets the boot.

Yeah, they never tell the "good" stories.

Like how a "major star" was on a flight to a major city in Eastern Europe and was a little stand offish to the crews.

Then, on takeoff, when the engine technically exploded, sending sparks and flames everywhere, this "standoffish" celebrity was suddenly very interested in communicating what he has seen to the crew and learned that day that what the cabin crew says about safety and the professionalism of pilots is super duper important when it comes to unforeseen circumstances.

You can operate for millions of flight hours without incident, but if there's one drunk pilot or an evil legacy raises fares by $1, oh it's the end of the world.

OK guys. I would like to mention that I do follow the regs and would never do anything unsafe in an airplane. This is me bowing out of a very one sided "discussion".

But the FAs are nasty about it. The example the captain I am flying with gave was: the announcement that the cabin door is closed is made, the announcement is made you need to turn off your devices and while your turning off your device a very rude FA is standing over you "TURN YOUR PHONE OFF SIR!"

I believe that it wasn't the fact they asked him to turn it off it was the WAY they asked. This will never come out in the light but it has happened to me many times and my co workers as well.

I agree. I think this is more a factor of having to do this daily multiple times on a leg. Then factor in F/As at my company make in the $8-$10/hr range. They just don't care, and airlines are unwilling to pay more for a higher caliber of people.

I recently had to remove a pax and I can tell you that the F/A who was working the flight was very caustic. Even the way she talked to me was "rough". I can imagine as a pax you would just want to punch her.

That being said, the alternative is to be nice until you just get them removed. You can smile while saying "sorry sir you'll need to finish your conversation at the gate, please see the gate agent for alternative plans" or you can get nasty and they'll turn their phone off. Which one, ultimately, is the pax going to prefer? And if you make the decision to remove the pax, you must follow thru with it IMO. He can't say "sorry" as he's being escorted off the plane and allowed to return.

Maybe I'm old school but if your cabin crew is being caustic with you, address it and if you don't get an acceptable resolution, have that crewmember replaced.

I'll bet you a dollar that the particular crewmember will have a different attitude.

She is from NY. That kind of "rough". She's plenty nice, just the way she says stuff, very frank. If that makes sense.

Ahh, I see. We had a stew from BWOOKLIN on the flight back from LAS a couple nights ago. Nice as can be, but by the tone I kept thinking I was going to get stabbed!

Well thanks for spelling out the regs for me: severe sarcasm

What's the big deal? I think the conversation is "one sided" because those of us in the airline world have seen thousands of passengers who are compliant, and maybe a hundred or two who weren't. We didn't write the rules, but we have to enforce them all the same.

The best way to make an ass of yourself on a flight is to be non compliant. 99.9% of the people do what they should. Why should we treat those who don't with kid gloves?

He was playing a video game he acknowledged as "being addicted to". Not a good excuse.
Ah, I didn't read the link, as I had heard the story on the news earlier just saying "using his phone". I didn't know he was playing a game, nothing I can say in his defense there. That's an asshat* move.

(You can totally say ass on here, and everyone wears hats)
