Alaska/Virgin arbitration

IMO, that's not surprising. Hiring a QXer means they have to replace that QX CA with a QX FO by upgrading him, hire a new QX FO to replace that FO who moved up. Or go off the street and hire a AS newhire FO, and keep QX guys where they are. I know they are suppose to guarantee a certain amount of newhires to QX, but I don't know what the reality / actual practice of that is. As for the chasing only the big 4, I don't blame them one bit!

It's tough to say. I'm not impressed so far. No scope is a huge issue and with this decision we won't have any until the next set of negotiations for a new contract in 2020. The NYC flight attendant base already closed. There is nothing official for the NYC pilot base, but IMHO it won't last long term. AAG has already said that like the 737s better for transcon than the 320s. In NY, we have a mixture of 737/320s doing different routes SEA/PDX/SAN on 737s and SFO/LAX/LAS on 320s. Unless they put all that on one fleet and base those routes for a NYC base, I don't see much hope.

What’s your plan if they close NYC?

I actually really like it here. Mostly because there is so much to get out and do, and the weather is amazing.
If you count the 40 degrees or colder and non-stop rain/drizzle from November through May as amazing, sure. That sort of thing just isn't my style. The summers are nothing short of phenomenal, however.

Hahahaha. Last winter was a bit much. But I do enjoy some rainy weather. This summer was almost too hot.

I can deal with the heat much better than I can with the cold. Hydration and shade help. Can't hydrate your way out of sleet.

That said, I can absolutely see the appeal of the area, it just wasn't for me. That, and it would've meant commuting for the next three decades and no, just no, to that notion.

You can have your heat! I dont blame you for wanting to commute for three decades. That sounds miserable.

You can also only take so many clothes off until you're naked. I can put clothes on to the point that -40 causes me to sweat.

For me, layering up and walking around like Randy in "A Christmas Story" was miserable. If it works for you, cool, do your thing.

Like I said, it just wasn't for me. Among other things, spending several minutes layering up just to walk to my car and not being able to enjoy the outdoors because it's freezing and icy/wet 6+ months of the year was no fun. I'm a San Diego kid at heart but spent 6 years in the Midwest. Cold and I don't do well together.

Now brb while I turn the thermostat to full cold in my hotel room.

It kinda doesn't matter if I take the upgrade next year, because that will only be LAX or SFO as CA. The only way to get back into NYC as a CA is if someone bids out and creates an opening and that hardly ever happens. Plus there are current CAs and FOs above me who want NY too. Retirements in New York are nil, and so far the base is capped so can't just bid into it unless the base size increaes. Our NY is like jetBlue's LGB base. You can hold it as a FO, get senior there and have decent schedules. But if you want to upgrade, it's a transcon commute and no telling when you can bid back to the west coast as Captain. Same story here, but flip the airports. @ClearedForOption knows what I mean ;)

So the plan is take the upgrade in the west coast and hopefully commute to mostly a line schedule (whole point of bypassing to get people below me there in the seat), and try to bid as many EWR/JFK overnights as I can and get some home nights. We'll see how the chips may fall in the future.
