Alaska Airline flight cockpit lockdown

Can someone explain this jewish ritual in more detail? Was the guy up dancing around, speaking in tongues, and flinging boxes with leather straps around? Or... was he peacefully sitting in his seat with the seatbelt fastened? I kinda doubt the crew would make such a big deal if it was the latter

I saw a guy do that one day at the Atlanta airport. I was confused as I had never heard of it or seen it, but i didn't find it startling. I think its something that could have been resolved with simple questioning. Surely SOMEONE on the plane has to have heard of it before and vouched for the guy.

Start taping small black boxes to yourself inside an airplane that I'm on and you might have a chance to really focus on your god because I'll most likely be sitting on top of you making sure there are no wires or timers on it. Yes that sounds incredibly meatheaded and insensitive and I'm not that kind of guy at all but really..can we be smart enough NOT To practice obscure religious ceremonies on aircraft when that might alarm others? . It's called Teffilin, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tefillin but I've never heard of it before. It appears this isn't the first time it's sparked security concerns and lockdowns.

It is not something that can wait.
Also look up tefillin that is what they put on.

I understand that, but if it gets to the point where pax and crew get alarmed by their behavior, then it will and must wait. Personally, I'm familiar with the practice, so I wouldn't be alarmed, but I can't speak for everybody.

Or would it be more appropriate to inform the FA and/or crew that your flight falls during a period that you will be praying, and at this time, and not to be alarmed. Being honest, up front, and open is not something terrorists do I think?

Good idea. I'd still be cautious though. Terrorists are not dumb.

I think I have heard of this joke somewhere.

"So you got three mexican jews that walk onto a plane........"

"If the plane should crash, at least there are two additional black boxes onboard" LOL...and for the record, it's true, all true. And I don't even feel sorry for it!

Grown people acting like little kids. Can't sit still for a few. Wait for the sign to turn off to pee. Wait until the plane lands to conduct your religious rituals. Some of the overly PC people on here are defending these guys but I bet it would be an entirely different situation if somebody was getting circumsized.
Hypocrite much?

SARCASM detectors to the on position please.

I like the picture of the captain with the "boxes" on his arms. Shows a little tolerance and understanding.

They probably see 'Merican Christians "drinking the blood of Christ" and think we are all nutjobs.

Playing devils advocate here; where does it say what type of prayer is acceptable on an airline flight? Welcome to America...home of freedom...

I'm alarmed by the number of dumb asses that get up to pee when the seatbelt sign is on. They're breaking the law more than these Jewish folks by not complying with crew member instructions. Where are the authorities when they do that?

Geesh, I need to change religions. I figure its a mix of lack of cultural understanding (although, even being jewish...I might wonder why they are in mexico too hah) or the fact that the pilots have no faith in its pax's to not freak out as well...The majority of people are pretty darn clueless....Go to the EL AL lines in JFK and you'll see a ton of Ultra Orthodox Jews praying, kind of neat to see...not scary

Couldn't they just have walked over and asked what was going on? Bunch of Nancies locking themselves into a room anytime the wind blows. I mean the citizens of the USA, not just these guys.

The terrorists won.

And your all a bunch of retards - well those of you on a hair trigger.

You may want to climb out of your hole and look around once and a while.

You should all just become angry heathen atheists like me. It's much more fun. If you just stand back and look at it all objectively, strapping black boxes of scripture to your arms is slightly less strange than belief in Transubstantiation. Just sayin'. :)

So a little birdy is telling me that there wasnt any hype on the actual plane. That the flight crew just 'locked down' the flight deck and had authorities meet the aircraft at the gate (I.e. law enforcement waited for them to deboard). No one knew the wiser. Apparently, they werent even asked to stop the ritual.

Hence why I didnt think it was a big deal. Maybe some more hard evidence will come out to clear this event up!
