Airway Transportation Systems Specialist

Anyone know more about this job? What it really entails?

Did you happen to read the "Duties" tab?

Airway Transportation Systems Specialists (ATSS) install and maintain electronic equipment and lighting aids associated with facilities and services required for aviation navigation to assure a reliable, safe, and smooth flow of air traffic. This involves work with radar, communications, computers, navigational aids, airport lighting aids, and electrical/mechanical support for facilities on and off airports within the network of the National Airspace System (NAS). It includes periodic maintenance (inspection and analysis of equipment with associated adjustments), corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and replacement of malfunctioning equipment, and certification. ATSSs could be involved with not only electronic equipment but also lighting aids and environmental support equipment for the NAS.

ATSSs may be required to maintain entire facilities, including electronic equipment, electrical power distribution, emergency backup power, power conditioning systems, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems; electronic equipment only; or power and HVAC systems only.

Yes I read the whole thing. I guess I was wondering if anyone who has this job or did have could shed some light on how it is and the good and the bad about it......

I never applied for this job but did apply for their electronic technicians a few years ago.

From what I understand, you will be on the road quite a bit, doing installations, decomissions, major system upgrades, etc etc.

I don't think that position involves doing the initial site survey for a system but if it does a lot of good experience

So if you have a family it might not be so good. If you want more stability recommend going for the electronic technician

I have heard this from an FAA technician that if/when the NEXT GEN comes on line, eventually there will only be 3 centers, one west, central and east. Only the busiest airports will have radar approach control, most of the long range enroute radars will be gone. Most of the ground based Navaids will be gone. So expect to be busy

Hey, thanks for the info on this position! That makes up my mind not to apply as I really can't do the traveling at this time in my life.

If the 3 center, no app/dep tracons idea comes about is that going to mean layoffs for atc'ers or will the retirements offset that?

I doubt it, but the FAA is always looking to cut costs. I have a friend at Ft Worth Center, he says they are getting ready to consolidate Houston and Ft Worth Centers into one location (Building) in Dallas. I would think they still need the same amount of controllers to handle the sectors that belong to each center. They will just have one less building to deal with.

Interesting... I hear they're doing the same thing up in Cleveland. I'm somewhat surprised that this hasn't been bigger news. Have I just been missing something?
