AirTran FO suspended for being in uniform at a circus

Besides, who goes to a circus in their uniform? More to this story...

Union sponsored event for family awareness. We have a lot of these, too, since we're in negotiations. AirTran is also in negotiations. Wearing the uniform is a sign of solidarity. It's not like the guy decided to play "I'm a cool airline pilot, look at me" as he was dropping his kids off. I hope you're not picking your kids up from day care the days I go straight from the airport to pick my kid up. Sorry, but I'm not gonna run home and change.

I suppose, if the manuals say not to wear your uniform away from work, then Air Tran is within their rights to suspend the guy for violating company policy. Seems like a stupid battle to pick though. Now they gotta pay someone else overtime to cover the guy's trips. Not to mention the ire they raised among all their employees, not just pilots, over an infraction that really doesn't amount to anything.

This thread reminds me of one of my favorite songs...Dropkick Murphys, Which Side Are You On? (originally penned by Florence Reece in 1931)

Our father was a union man some day i'll be one too.
The bosses fired daddy what's our family gonna do?
Come all you good workers good news to you
I'll tell of how the good old union has come in here to dwell.

[Chorus:]
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?

My daddy was miner and I'm a miner's son
and I'll stick with the union 'til every battles won.

They say in Harlan County there are no neutrals there
you'll either be a union man or a thug for J.H. Blair

[Chorus:]
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?

Oh workers can you stand it?
Oh tell me how you can
Will you be a lousy scab or will you be a man?

[Chorus:]
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?

Don't scab for the bosses don't listen to their lies
us poor folks haven't got a chance unless we organize.

[Chorus:]
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?

What does the operations manual and employee handbook say about wearing your uniform when not on duty?

Are you for real??? What, am I supposed to wait until I get to the crewroom, check-in, and ONLY THEN don my uniform?

The guy was on the way to work according to the story!

That was probably the most boneheaded move on the part of management on such a trivial issue.

Fine, give the pilots suit-up pay, adequate lockers and private changing rooms.

Amen. I just love wondering around my crew room in search for even a measly hanger to hang my blazer. I found a busted one the other night that sufficed :)

So management must have a mole that attends all union events. Find the mole...then call Bobby Bacala, Uncle Pauley and Amorris to disappear the mole.

i am more than willing to offer free services. if you are going to be a snitch and not join the cause then you need to be dealt with. i know that this is a temporary fix and that there is a professional way to make changes. knowing that people go against the grain just so they can stand out makes me upset and moe importantly disappointed.

in my opinion unions would not be necessary if management did the job right the first time. i have always thought that if you treat employees as assets and not liabilities you will have a happy and efficient work force.

Look at SWA. Why can people not learn from their model? Happy employees make for a profitable airline!

That isn't the only reason they are profitable, but it certainly is important. You can debate union or non-union till your blue in the face. Bottom line is; if management is made up of incredibly greedy beasts a union will do little for pay but may offer important protections. SWA is one of the most heavily unionized carriers in existance - and yet they have relative labor harmony. Too many people on the management side of the table are just as reactionary as people on the union side. People assume that by not having a union they are doomed...but just as divisive is a management group that assumes that if a union is brought in it also spells doom. SWA is a great example that it doesn't. Management could focus on treating employees like human beings - whether they are unionized or not - and they would be better served than by hiring union busting law firms and punitive actions against employees. This is just my opinion.

Of course, Jet Blue not certifying a union and then signing a contract that pays third year FO's less than $60 per hour would say I am wrong, I still believe what I have written.

Hey, what are you getting pissed at me for? All I did was ask what the policy was.

But to answer your question: Why not? The only thing that really makes an airline uniform is the insignia. Wear the shirt, wear the pants, remove the stripes and the wings, and pin 'em on walking into the terminal or wherever. Not that big a deal.

That really is THE pertinent question, isn't it. You have to wonder what is real motive behind some of the petty decisions made by the pencil monkeys.

SWA wasn't always like that but once they got rid of Muse, things apparently got a lot better. But that was a very long time ago.

Management isn't one factor; it's the only factor. :D
