Airports with GPS Approach as Alternate??

I was taught that you couldn't file a airport with only a GPS approach as an alternate and a lot of other pilots I know where taught this also. Only problem I can not find a reg anywhere that supports this.

Any ideas? or common misconception?

Incorrect.

IF your destination is served only by a GPS approach, then your ALTERNATE (if one is required) must have a conventional ground-based approach.

I believe it was in AC90-100 or something... I'll try to find it for you.

The alternate minimums for GPS approaches was "N/A", so that's where the "reg" came from. WAAS removes this restriction, but I'm not sure where that leaves non-WAAS equipment.

The only place that I can have found this is in the AIM:

1-1-19

There is a Note under h. GPS Approach Procedures

Hope that helps.

AIM 1-1-20. Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS)

(a)
Due to initial system limitation, there are certain restrictions on WAAS operations. Pilots may plan to use any instrument approach authorized for use with WAAS avionics at a required alternate. However, when using WAAS at an alternate airport, flight planning must be based on flying the RNAV (GPS) LNAV minima line, or minima on a GPS approach procedure, or conventional approach procedure with "or GPS" in the title. Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) Part 91 nonprecision weather requirements must be used for planning. Upon arrival at an alternate, when the WAAS navigation system indicates that LNAV/VNAV or LPV service is available, then vertical guidance may be used to complete the approach using the displayed level of service. The FAA has begun removing the

NA (Alternate Minimums Not Authorized) symbol from select RNAV (GPS) and GPS approach procedures so they may be used by approach approved WAAS receivers at alternate airports. Some approach procedures will still require the

NA for other reasons, such as no weather reporting, so it cannot be removed from all procedures. Since every procedure must be individually evaluated, removal of the

NA from RNAV (GPS) and GPS procedures will take some time.

And you must be equipped to fly that approach without relying on the GPS, meaning if the ILS at your alternate requires ADF or DME you can't fly it using GPS as a substitute.

I just reviewed that section of the FAA's new IFR procedures guide today.
