this is hilarious, here is the original question

A plane is standing on a runway that can move (some sort of band conveyer). The plane moves in one direction, while the conveyer moves in the opposite direction. This conveyer has a control system that tracks the plane speed and tunes the speed of the conveyer to be exactly the same (but in opposite direction).

The question is:

Will the plane take off or not? Will it be able to run up and take off?

Out of curiousity I want to see what you guys think. I'm amazed at the answers at the other place.

D'oh! I almost fell for that!

Sure it will take off. It'll spin the HELL out of the main gear though! Otherwise, planes couldn't takeoff on ice, right? :)

Yes!
You would not believe how many times I tried to explain it to them in different ways, yet they REFUSED to get it.

I almost fell for it which is why I amended my previous post. Perhaps it was the Becks Dark talking!

Yeah, but I've got verbal judo and kung fu grip. Bow down!

yeah.... about that....

Someone mind explaining it to little ol' me? I would go with the "no relative wind" theory that sooomeone mentioned earlier, haha.... but I'm sure you have a good explination on why it would fly.

well, since I apparently suck at explaining it, someone else made this crude demonstration

basically since the airplane doesn't pull itself along the ground like a car, the treadmill has little effect. Does it have a point? No. I just had a theory that a group of pilots would "get it" quicker than your average internet warrior, and so far I seem to be correct.

mine either, and I took physics at the community college over summer because it was easier :o

I had enough physics when I wanted to be an engineer.
