Airplane fuel leak noticed by passenger

Leaking fuel at Cruise

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ghatz3FXGck

I was just wondering how long it was leaking fuel prior to somebody noticing, and IF it was a long time, why the pilots didn't realize? Wouldn't some kind of bell or whistle go off if your losing a lot more fuel from one side of the plane?

Also, why divert to San Diego when your that far away? Does this type of "emergency" give time to go the the "best" location, or should it be a land asap? What if the leak could have gotten worse as time went on... maybe I'm missing something but it seemed like a long diversion to me... then again, I fly a 172.

Not Speculating, just very curious! Thanks!
