airplane crashes on Kansas golf course

As to their age, I always kinda laughed at how we could rent airplanes but couldn't rent cars yet. Thank goodness for FBO cars. A buddy of mine was an RJ CA and couldn't even rent a car on an overnight.

At least the report wont read something like this (NTSB MIA92FA051):

THE PRIVATE PILOT AND A PILOT RATED PASSENGER WERE GOING TO PRACTICE SIMULATED INSTRUMENT FLIGHT. WITNESSES OBSERVED THE AIRPLANE'S RIGHT WING FAIL IN A DIVE AND CRASH. EXAMINATION OF THE WRECKAGE AND BODIES REVEALED THAT BOTH OCCUPANTS WERE PARTIALLY CLOTHED AND THE FRONT RIGHT SEAT WAS IN THE FULL AFT RECLINING POSITION. NEITHER BODY SHOWED EVIDENCE OF SEATBELTS OR SHOULDER HARNESSES BEING WORN. EXAMINATION OF THE INDIVIDUALS' CLOTHING REVEALED NO EVIDENCE OF RIPPING OR DISTRESS TO THE ZIPPERS AND BELTS.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
  • THE PILOT IN COMMAND'S IMPROPER INFLIGHT DECISION TO DIVERT HER ATTENTION TO OTHER ACTIVITIES NOT RELATED TO THE CONDUCT OF THE FLIGHT. CONTRIBUTING TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE EXCEEDING OF THE DESIGN LIMITS OF THE AIRPLANE LEADING TO A WING FAILURE.

A couple of my buddies were time building for their instrument ratings and encountered weather about 150nm out from home base. Couldn't rent a car, so they left the airplane tied down and took AmTrak home. We laugh about that story all the time.

Is it just me or do those before and after crash photos remind you of the old "this is you before and after drugs"

Almost reminds me of those "this is what you looked like before drugs, and this is what you look like after" photos. Good on the pilot for getting it down and walking away from it.

At least they died doing what they lo..... Too soon?

Given how intact the fuselage is, I"m really surprised they were banged up this bad even.

I flew an F model a long time ago and I don't think it had shoulder straps. When I had my off field excursion, that plane (different m/m , same vintage) didn't have a shoulder strap either. I received a cut on my forehead when everything came to a stop because the Rosen visor came swinging down as I was tossed forward. Bled like a stuck pig for a very small laceration.

My Luscombe only had lap belts in it. We installed shoulder harnesses with a 337.

Well... glad they made it ok.

The kid now has the best college application essay ever.
He's been on just about every national news channel with his "amazing story". Will be interesting to see what the NTSB comes up with....

It's either "I made a horrible mistake and everybody almost died. I learned a lot and am a better person" or "I thought quickly on my feet and saved everybody. I learned a lot and am a better person."

Or captains still on their parents insurance?

Safely landed the airplane after and engine failure? National News darling? Yeah that young man is all up in her business...as we speak.
