Airline pilot schedule options

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies guys, it's very helpful.

Just to offer another perspective, did you look inside your department as well? I know most PD's with an aviation department tend to use rotary wing but there are a few that have some fixed wing. For example, in PA the State Police has a twin. This way, you don't have to leave something that you already love but add something else to it. Also, if for some reason you can't hold your medical anymore, at least you should still be able to stay in the department and have a job. Either way, good luck with your choice.

Budget cuts have forced a lot of departments to sell most or all of their air units. Last I knew Denver was down to just one helicopter.

Same kinda situation here! I'm 34 and have 11 years on the fire dept......private pilot .... Few years back was gonna do ATP and try to jump careers. Ended up stayin on the job here and possibly can fly when I retire...I'll be 43 at that point .....hopefully things stay on an upward spiral with the airlines. BUT.....always wonder should I do it now. Best course of action I think would be finish ratings , CFI on my days off .....retire from FD and then start second career

Thanks for all the input guys. Ross, you make a good point about law enforcement aviation. Yes, Denver PD is down to one chopper and only three pilots. Not good odds. The Colorado State Patrol has several aircraft (they fly the governor and others around), but the prospect of working traffic, versus investigations, for years is not appealing. =) I think at this point flying is going to stay a very expensive hobby!
