Airline Pilot makes top 25 jobs list from 2005-2009

Chris, Chris, Chris, where to begin.

First, find me one time where I said going to college makes me better than other people. Go on. Do it. I challenge you.

Second, it IS relevant. There is, whether you like it or not, a correlation between education and income. And if a job requires a college degree, then it must be compared against jobs with require college degrees.

Surely you wouldn't consider comparing the income of a job like a doctor, which requires post graduate education and an apprenticeship, against the greeter at the Wal-Mart. Or maybe you would, given your past assertions.

Most people would not.

Sorry, I wasn't addressing you specifically... But a lot of college grads look down on other people who don't have college education. Failure to clarify on my part.

Being a pilot does not require a college degree. Like I said before, it may help, but you can theoretically work for a major without a degree.

No, but if the doctor was complaining that he couldn't live on $200k a year, I would make the same comparison that I am making (50% of the country can live on less than $48k a year).

I'm not saying that because of this pilots deserve to be paid less, I'm just opposed to when people make these sweeping statements of "Nobody could possibly live on $75,000 a year!" when clearly a large portion of the country is, and would be appalled that people actually think that.
Most people would not.

I'm also going in with 4 plus pages, with n$*&'s on the 5th page and this thread sent to the lav on the 3rd.

Chris, Chris, Chris.

Where did I say that you can't live on $75K a year?

Show me.

Go on, do it.

I am simply saying that you must compare jobs requiring college degrees (in fact, not theory, because of the thousands of airline pilots, how many don't have college degrees) with others requiring them.

That's all.

I think it is a gross over-generalization to sum up the downward trend of pilot income as simply an issue of worker surplus. This is not Econ 101 and all things are not equal.
Over-generalization maybe, but fairly accurate in my opinion. Too many pilots = lower wages. Fewer pilots = rising wages.

The "old days" of airline regulation and the ability to use monopolistic style pricing practices are what "allowed" pilot wages to rise to the levels that they did. Those days are over, and the market will dictate wage structures to the pilots, not the other way around.

I just like flying, cant we put the food on the table, keep KeyBank from calling, and call it good? Is the money why any of you really started flying?

Healthy family, warm bed, full stomachs, and being happy is everything you need, right?

It's not all about you Tony, but it's good to see that you're ready on the defensive. I'm paraphrasing what I've heard from other individuals in other threads (perhaps yourself included, I really don't care enough to go search through old flamewars) and also what's seen on other boards.

And I still say that pilots make more than your average 4 year degree person would. Because for every regional pilot, there's a philosophy or ceramic sciences major.

But.... how can you be happy if you're not clearly better than everyone else? :sarcasm: (which should be assumed, but I don't think I've ever responded to you, so I didn't want any misunderstandings :D)

It does seem rather subjective as to whether flying an airplane "requires" a college degree. Some of the best pilots I've known in my career didn't have college degrees. The airlines have put it in as a "requirement" because they had plenty of pilots to choose from and it's become ingrained in airline hiring tradition. I believe it's not such a big deal for European carriers, but I could be wrong on that.

There is only one qualification that separates pilots from other folks. They want strongly enough to fly airplanes as a career to do what it takes to fly airplanes as a career. Including getting a degree. Right now there are plenty of them. If salaries keep falling that could change.

And BTW, if med schools pump out too many doctors, then doctor's salaries fall. As they have been.

Oh heck, you can practice medicine without a degree. Come on out to Arizona and we'll visit the local shamen down at McDowell Indian Reservation.

Pilots without degrees are much more common (per capita) than shamens :)

I'm still going after my 40 acres and a mule. The new milleniums version of 40 acres and a mule...and no that does not include an Escalade:)

Only if I can pick where the 40 acres are. I'm thinking Pacific Pallisaides, but I'll take a rain check on the mule.

Let's see, quote someone and then insinuate that he says you can't live on $75K a year and yeah, it does tend to piss them off, ESPECIALLY IF THEY NEVER SAID that.

I say enough stupid crap that I can get called on that I don't need any more being attibuted to me.

Dude you need to stop getting all defensive, it really makes you look like a little bitch. Why can't you ever have a calm debate without excitedly challenging people and puffing out your chest. His comment wasn't directed to you but to a general unknown portion of the population who feel that way.

See my post about mav in the lav
I would consider that a unique situation where a person is clearly and consistently trying to elicit a reaction from you two. However for every other thread where a person has a different opinion there is no need to fly off the handle at every response. Remember, Dougs living room and not your corner pub.

Seeing how he quoted me in his response, it is logical to conclude that he was directing said comment at me.

If you're not directing a comment at someone, don't quote 'em. Plus, I was pretty irritated with Chris already when he insinuated that I thought I was better than others simply because I have a college degree.

Yeah, yeah, I know, he apologized for that one, but the effect was still there.
