Airline Execs to speak in class tomorrow...Questions?

Hi everyone -

David Neeleman (CEO, JetBlue), Paul Foley (CEO, Mesaba Airlines), Dan Garton (VP, AMR Marketing), John Riordan (Chief Marketing Officer, Virgin Atlantic) and Alfred Kahn (DUH!) will be speaking on a panel in my Airline Management class tomorrow morning (two being Alumni). I have some questions for them, but was wondering if any of you had some I could try and get answered. Sorry for the short-notice: I didn't know that we would get to ask questions until this evening.

I should let all the youngins know that I do NOT attend an aviation school. There are options to learn about aviation at an Ivy League University, believe it or not!

personally, I'd like to ask why they're willing to take concessions from their employees (fuel costs associated with everything else) instead of attaching the additional costs to the purchaser like every other good businessman would.. and why not just include all the fees and make everything inclusive, that way the purchaser knows EXACTLY how much they're spending (giving them the feeling of comfort with their purchase?)?!

and maybe asking the Jetblue CEO right out "what is your secret with the employees that maintains the happy employee/happy mgmt relationship" so that the other CEO's might take a HINT!

It was interesting although not much was said that this board hasn't already discussed:

- Everyone blamed fuel prices, and stated that they hope to be able to pass on increases in fuel costs to the customer at some point in the near future.

- Lots of blame was put on the current ATC system and lack of runways.

- Dr. Kahn called Neeleman and Kelleher his "vindicators," as they are making money in a deregulated environment.

- Neeleman claimed that the day B6 needs unions is the day they fail as a company.

- Riordan was HILARIOUS. Funny Irish guy with that Bransonesque Virgin flare.

An interesting note: they all seem to have free passes on eachother's airline. Must be professional courtesy, I guess.

So was Piedmont Airlines (The real one, not Henson) prior to the USAir...merger.

Hate to break it to the good Dr, but Herb's retired. He isn't operating in a deregulated environment anymore. He's drinking Wild Turkey and smoking himself to death in his big house in Dallas.

As acting 'Chairman of the Board of Southwest Airlines, Co.' Herb is only as 'retired' as he wants to be. You can bet he has his stamp of approval on every thing major that goes on or it doesn't happen.
 
True, but he doesn't worry about the day to day ops like Kelly does. Herb just comes in to save labor negotiations when they get royally screwed up.

Any airline that flies into an airport without enough runways hasn't done their research and planning properly......
