Aircraft Call-sign first or last?

CJ,

I totally understand what your saying and agree 100%.

TO ALL check out Don Brown's column "Say Again #4 Tape Talk" at AVWeb http://www.avweb.com/news/sayagain/182636-1.html

It's a good one to read about transmitting.

One of the first thing controllers are taught about talking on the radio is that the first word out of our mouths is usually cut off. There's a delay between keying the microphone and the start of the transmission. Not to mention the tendency to start talking before you key the switch. That's one reason controllers are required to say "November" or the aircraft type first.

TB

Quite frankly, even though it's *acceptable* to read back instructions with the call sign first, it really frustrates me to no end when I hear it being read back this way.

It seems like the school I instruct at has TOO MANY people who don't care about how they sound on the radios (e.g. "with you," "any traffic in the area please advise," etc...). It's really a monkey-see, monkey-do attitude.

The reason I don't like hearing...

ATC: "Airline 450, turn left heading 180."
Pilot: "Airline 450, turn left heading 180."

...is because there is absolutely no distinction between who said what. It sounds as if there's five million controllers in the air. Nothing frustrates me more than hearing so many students/instructors do this. It sounds as if they're giving themselves the instruction. There's only ONE controller, not fifteen.

Instructor: "Sioux 40 (our school's callsign), turn left heading 150." sighs...

Sioux 40 (our school's callsign), turn left heading 150." sighs...

See, now I am being taught that when the controller calls me with this instruction I should answer

"left heading 150 for Sioux 40"

Is this not correct?????

That's most definitely my preference. If you want to get into specifics, I'd rather not say "for Sioux 40," and instead just, "left heading 150, Sioux 40," but that's another topic. :)

That's what I prefer to hear as a controller. At my base there are a lot of similar call signs ie Jesse95, Jesse94 etc. Last week I had a Vandy53, Vandy56, and Vandy93 at the same time. (T-1's doing practice approaches at our base). I definitely like hearing the call sign. However, that's just personal preference
