Airbus is getting rather nasty

...and totally awesome through and through.

Not much to look at, but I got to drive one, and they are tremendous fun. In that way, I think it does deserve the GTO badge...relatively simple, relatively cheap, big car, BIG POWER. And while, yes, it's a Holden, the engine and transmission is 'Murican all the way. AND it will go around a corner without attempting to murder you. If I were going to drop $15k on a fast car, it'd be high on my list.

I owned an '04 GTO, and it was thoroughly worthy of the badge.

Let's not forget what muscle cars originally were: plain-jane sedans on the outside with monster motors on the inside.

This was mine: Torrent red, 6-speed manual, 5.7L V-8, 350 HP (and 25 MPG!). I had to sell it when I got stationed in Europe (due to the terms of the loan, unfortunately). I miss it alllll the time.

I'm a big fan of the Holdens. The GTO and the G8 GXP (re-appearing as the Chevy SS next year).

Everytime I'm in Oz, it's dumbfounding between the Holdens and the Ford FPV Falcons. All muscle cars.

Although none will top 60's MOPAR. Belvedere Max Wedge? Yes please!

Ah, you had the "little" engine. ;)

Indeed. Actually picked the car up pretty damn 'cheap' because the '05s had come out with more desirable features: scooped hoods, 6.0L LS2, redesigned rear end...and the '04s were sitting on the lot and not selling.

I drove the 6.0...but there was performance to burn. IMS, the 5.7s are still considerably cheaper, and if I were buying, I'd probably get one of those. Plus, I sort of like the understated look of the scoopless 5.7s. The original muscle cars were "Q-Ships", not shouty "look at me" cockmobiles. If you want an automotive phallus, go whole hog (er, so to speak) and get a Corvette.

When I was shopping, I did back-to-back test drives of the '05 Mustang GT, the '05 GTO, and the '04 GTO. In terms of performance, I really could not tell the power difference between the two GTOs, but they both were more powerful and cornered better than the Mustang GT.

The Mustang also had a cheapish, ugly interior, so that sealed the deal for me.

The "newish" Mustang is kind of Meh. It's not bad, but I agree that it's not nearly as good as the GTO. Have you driven the "new" Camaro, though? Ugh. What an utter dog's breakfast. Can't see out of it, it's far too wide, the transmission feels like it's out of a Cavalier, and you could murder someone with the plastics that comprise the entire interior. So obviously built to a price that it's embarrassing. I don't say this lightly: It felt like a Chrysler. *shudder*.

Not exactly a plain-jane sedan.

I'm a bit like Wacofan here though, as he says nothing without a tailwheel is worth flying, I say there can be no muscle cars like the originals. :)

By most accounts, this is the original muscle car:

Certainly, there's a lot awesome about the shouty, ridiculous late 60s-early 70s Detroit Muscle. But they weren't even nearly the Original.

Am important distinction with "real" GTO's I might add.

Yeah, I only drove one once, but it seemed like it was pretty much ready to bite my head off any time I moved the steering wheel. "Go straight, little Man, or die!"

Yeah...old vettes, old school muscle cars of any kind, they are awesome but not exactly well behaved. They're like the taildraggers of cars, like Amber said.
