In researching the behind the scenes of the airlines, I noticed that as well as dispatchers, airlines have air traffic coordinators. How do you become one? Are they normally dispatchers who move on to that position?
Yes, it's just everyday dispatchers that staff that position. You get trained on it and eventually signed off and qualified to work it. You can either bid it or sometimes just become ATC Coordinator relief for fill ins. Some folks may get a better shot of getting picked to train for it. For instance if you were a controller in the military. I will add there is usually if not always an override for it on top of regular dispatch pay. Anywhere from $1.00 an upwards to possibly $5.00 depending on contract.
