It's affective versus cognitive response - typically stimuli that appeal to our affective (emotional) senses receive a greater response. That's why political candidates use exacerbated emotional appeals versus hard facts in their campaign ads. Two empty planes colliding doesn't appeal to our emotion - it's just the destruction of lifeless objects. Throw in human lives, however, and now there's an emotional connection. It's not that we're evil, it's just that we find information more appealing if we have some reason to feel an emotional response from it.
