I really don't have a problem with trying to apply with units around the country. I would probably apply to units that operate A-10's up to C-130's.
Anyway I found a nice website on getting pilot slots with AD and the ANG. Gives very good tips on what to do if asked to come in for an interview and such.
I don't know if it is accurate. Only someone who has gone through the process knows.
