I recieved my third Air Medal today for a mission I flew durring OIF. Do you think this qualifies me to begin stories with "there I was, inverted with my air medals dangling in my face" ?

I was at a reception the other night for the outgoing Unit we are replacing, one of the pilots got his 43rd Air Medal. Lucky me I'll end my tour with one.

Where were you guys stationed when you received these medals. My lil brother enlisted last summer in the reserves with the marines to a) help his resume for law enforcement, and b) do something for the country. Well, he's getting his chance to do B sooner than expected. Shipping out in January to replace a unit in Baghdad as a security force following the elections. Id love to hear your stories of your missions that you flew. It might help to put me at ease on this whole situation. BTW, we just found out last weekend of his orders.

You get an Air Medal for acting as a crewmember during aerial flight in a combat zone, it used to be one for every 25 hrs. of flight time, not sure what it is now. I'll get my mine in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom ( Afghanistan ).
Your Brother will be well trained, trust him to take care of himself. Tell him to keep alert and be smart and he should be OK.
I don't have any good stories like Mike D, but then again I've only been here a few weeks. It is interesting, there is no doubt its a combat zone. I'm probably more at risk sleeping in the tent than I am flying. I go back up North in a short time, Hopefully it'll be boring and I won't have any "good" strories to share.

Jim

I'm still working on getting my first Air Medal... Unfortunately I don't think it will happen. You used to qualilfy with 20 flights overland Bosnia/Kosovo, and I only have 12 or 13, but they recently went to a point system I think...
Anyway, pitotheat1, if you get another one you think you could send it my way?

I agree with Jim concerning your brother, he is well trained and if you remind him to not to get complacent he’ll be home before you know it. The norm for receiving an Air Medal in my unit has been 6 months in combat zone while serving as a aircrew member or submitted by your chain of command for meritorious action involving duties as an aircrew member. The one I received today reads as follows:
“For exceptionally meritorious achievement while serving as a pilot. Chief Warrant Officer Two Simmons’ aviation skills were instrumental during Operation Longstreet in support of air assaults for the 82nd Airborne Division. His dedication of duty and professionalism had direct impact on the stabilization of the northern Babil Province and reflect great credit upon himself , 12th Aviation Brigade, Victory Corps, and the United States Army.”
There it is with out going into details.

Jim- 43! Wow, I can just imagine how his stories would begin….”There I was, losing altitude because I was wearing all my Air Medals!”

If you stick with this kind of business long enough, you'll get plenty of your own man. Just ask that guy with 43!......O.K. I'm over that now.

As I remember it:

10 O1 flights( Afgan./Iraq)
20 O2 flights ( Not sure what are O2 these days, ONW-OSW were once)
Would get you one!!

I have 4

Basic criteria:
1. Mission was flown in support of OIF as directed by the ATO or USCENTAF command authority; and
2. Mission symbol was logged as O-1 (combat); and
3. Mission entered Iraqi airspace.

I have five, currently flying in the AOR for number six. The newest guidence from CENTAF is TWENTY 0-1/combat sorties for award of the Air Medal for OIF. Not too sure how that stacks up to OEF, but it's probably the same.

Air Medals are fine (Congrats, BTW). But what's even better.....

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!
...for volunteering
...for being separated from your loved ones
...for training and fighting with your all
...for caring about what matters
...for defending America (and Iraq)
...for defending Freedom
...for 'stepping into the line of fire'
...and for the sacrifice, knowing it what it may ultimately be.

We may like to bicker around political tables, but all of the brave men and women in this cause have nothing but the utmost support, respect, and thanks of America. That beats a medal anyday.

No matter how many times we say it, it can never be enough. Anyone, please feel free to add to my short list of "thanks."
