Air India plane crash

The RAT on the 787 is in the right-side wing-body fairing aft of the wing

I don't know how credible the Times of India is, but they're reporting one survivor who was completely uninjured. Take it with a grain of salt.

Appears to be a credible source, and not another outlet that’s just AI generated garbage.

The last call from the pilot was a mayday call saying "engine failure" . Yikes. RIP.

I don’t know if I believe that. Zero smoke or yaw indicating engine failure and they were so close to the ground you wouldn’t be making radio calls, just trying to process what’s happening.

Does the RAT deploy automatically or is it part of a memory item?

I can't see the RAT on either video. Can anyone do a red circle for me?

I can’t link the new video I found, but footage caught the takeoff roll, rotation and initial climb. No yaw, not even a pitch adjustment, seemed to hold the same attitude as it lost altitude and crashed. I would have thought even a gentle engine roll back would cause some movement along the vertical axis, but the video isn’t of the greatest quality so who knows. Bummer situation for sure

What was the temp and elevation of the airfield?

Simon Hadrecky's (Hradecky?) website (The Aviation Herald) is getting the hug-o-death right now for fairly obvious reasons, but I bet he's got the METAR posted already.

One of the conditions for automatic RAT deployment on the 787 is “both engines have failed.” I don’t know what that means specifically beyond there’s probably an EICAS message (i.e. does “failed” include degraded operation there?)

At this point I am not convinced we see the RAT deployed, so this is just a systems discussion.

In the takeoff video that is circulating, it looks like they rotated right into a stall.

But if there was an engine failure and the RAT is indeed deployed, I wonder if they secured the engine early, and did the wrong side.

I'd think it wouldnt have even gotten off the ground if that was the case

Its fly by wire so I'd assume you pitch up and it holds it at VLS or whatever Boring calls it

Yea I dunno how the FBW system works on the 787. It doesn't appear to be a full stall but the airplane seems to have just enough lift to rotate and that is almost it. No yawing moment, no wing rocking. Looks like a very controlled aircraft right to impact. This is an odd one.
