(CNN) -- An Airbus airplane was forced to turn back to New York 90 minutes into a flight to Paris, Air France said Monday.
The Air France A380 turned back due to a "minor incident," the airline said, refusing to say what the technical hitch was.
Airbus also declined to specify what caused the plane to turn back, saying the incident was an issue for the Air France maintenance team not the aircraft's manufacturer.
The pilots made the decision to turn back "in strict accordance with procedures and as a precautionary measure... following a minor technical problem in order to carry out ground checks," Air France said.
The plane landed at New York's John F. Kennedy International airport "without incident" at 10:17 p.m. ET on Friday, November 27, Air France said. The plane was serviced and later completed its transatlantic journey, the airline said.
Air France had begun flying the brand-new A380 across the Atlantic only days before, Airbus said.
Its inaugural commercial flight from Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport to JFK was on November 21.
Air France became the fourth airline to operate the superjumbo when it received its first A380 at the end of last month.
-- CNN's Ayesha Durgahee in London, England, contributed to this report.

From an AFP article:

PARIS — An Air France A380 had to turn around and land in New York after problems with its navigation system, only days after the super-jumbo began flying across the Atlantic, the airline said Monday.

The double-decker Airbus made a U-turn 90 minutes after take-off from New York and landed safely at Kennedy Airport in the early hours of Saturday, an Air France spokesman told AFP.

"The plane is new and is still getting into its stride. It was a minor computer problem that made navigation a little imprecise," he said.

I think the thing has three FMSs and three ADIRUs (plus two standby systems). I wonder what kind of technical problem could exist that the flight did not continue.

There was apparently some issue with the pressurization system on the A380 during the design phase. Apparently somebody tried to blow the whistle and then got fired for it because the EU doesn't have whistle blower protection laws. I remember reading about it three or four years ago.

What's that got to do with navigation?

I didn't actually read the article referenced. :o:laff: I saw "problem" and "A380" and "diversion" and made an inference.
Ah you took that wrong...actually I typed it wrong, sorry. That definitely came off dooshy of me. My bad...beers all around.

I was just wondering if a it was maybe an ETP thing (pressurization + navigation) and more info was out there than I was willing to dig for.

The real problem was that Sam Chui ran out of batteries and wouldn't have been able to take more boring pictures of the First Class bar.

That's alright! :)
I don't know if it would be related to navigation or not.

I always wondered what do 2 pilots do with the third FMS? Is it just a backup or actively used?

I'm diggin my new avatar more. :yup:

The man is that famous now!? LOL!

I, for one, didn't even know AF brought the A380s into JFK! I thought after Emirates pulled out there weren't any coming back to NYC.

I heard the A380's were coming back to JFK, dunno who/when.

But funny enough i think i noticed that AirFrance A380 there in JFK that night, thought it seemed a bit out of place in Terminal 1 for the size.
