Air Force One, with President Barack Obama aboard, aborted an attempt to land at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut on Wednesday morning because of bad weather, federal officials said.

The president’s pilot first tried to land the plane shortly before 10 a.m., but officials said he pulled back and circled the airport because of poor visibility. Air Force One landed successfully on the second attempt five minutes later, the White House said in a statement.

“The pilot was in the process of landing but due to weather the pilot decided to circle around and then landed the plane,” White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said, adding that “this is a standard and safe procedure.”

President Obama was flying from Andrews Air Force Base to deliver a commencement address at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.

Mr. Obama stepped off the plane at Bradley Airport to overcast skies and a light rain, according to a press pool report.

The aborted landing comes after a string of incidents that have spotlighted the Federal Aviation Administration, including controllers falling asleep and an aborted landing at Andrews Air Force Base of a plane carrying First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, the wife of the vice president.
