Tack on the fact that the pilot training commitment is pretty long (8 years when I went through, and 10 shortly thereafter), and you will find that you are signing away a very large portion of your life with very little guarantee about what you will be doing with it.

Then again, you can always try to resign before your time is up...

Also, I think the committment was 10 years for pilot training for the two classes after me. Sucks to be '00 and '01. I think it is back to 8 years again.

Here are two active Air Force Liason Officers that I know and trust:

Ed Kirkham: email KC-135 & 767-400 Captain
Ken McKay: email C-9 & 767-300 ER Captain

Both are great guys, straight shooters and like to help.

I am going to chime in again and say I strongly disagree with the assertion that airlines are neutral to military vs civilian pilots. Perhaps if you are talking regionals, you might have a case. However, when it comes to majors, I can understand why many *think* that it is neutral, but it is just not reality.

Although many major airlines (with some noteable exceptions that strongly bias towards military) seem to hire about an even mix, what people forget is that the percentage of applicants from civilian ranks is a LOT higher in all cases. Not only are there fewer military pilots to begin with, but of that, only the ones finished with their commitment can even apply, and, not all of them even want to go the airline route.

While I don't have exact numbers, I would venture that an extremely high percentage of military pilots who are free to take civilian jobs, and who actually apply for those jobs, get hired.

I have a close friend at UPS that is part of the hiring process there...we were talking about the fact that they have a stack of RJ Captain resumes about 3 feet tall and that they tend to look more strongly at prior military over civilian....of course a lot has to do with the upper management and chief pilots as well there....food for thought....
