Ahhh...The Life of a Reserve Pilot!

For those of you with the yearning to know what life's like at a regional, here it goes(yes I am really that bored!!)....after enjoying my total of 38 hours at home this week with my wife and 7 week old daughter - I was called for a reserve trip last night - an 'easy' highspeed from DTW to AVP and back this morning. It was my first time to AVP for a long time and my FO was also an old Allegheny guy that was based at BGM with me so I was looking forward to visitng our old stomping grounds(AVP was a common destination for BGM crews)...walk onto a black airplane because the external power on the jet bridge doesn't work but no big deal, mechanic tells me that the #1 ice detector has been MEL'd - again, not a huge deal. As is standard practice we are min fueled with a mere 17 minutes of contingency fuel before we would have to dip into our reserve fuel - actually we had 400 lbs of C-Fuel and how the crap we could get 17 minutes out of 400 lbs in the CRJ is beyond me. Anyway, we finally get things going and shut the door and block out...I happen to glance at ED2 and see we have 1 more status message than we should have - "MAIN BATT CHRGR"...quick glance at the QRH indicates that the main battery charger is not functioning(duh!)....I have enough hours in the Challenger/CRJ to know that a battery problem is usually a minor annoyance at worst so I consider going anyway but being the rule abiding Captain that I am, since we're still waiting for a pushback crew I call maint. on the cell phone to get the circuit breaker reset sequence(they don't call it the 'Reset Jet' for nothing!!) - long story short, main ended up coming out and MEL'ing the main battery charger - has anyone flown a CRJ with a battery charger MEL'd?? What a pain in the marbles - to my amazement you lose a TON of stuff including service lights, both clocks(even the time display on the the MFD's), APR, APU, etc. etc.

We finally get to the hotel several hours late meaning that if I go right to bed I MIGHT be able to squeeze in 3 hours of sleep before we have to get up and head back to the airport. The morning flight to DTW went amazingly smooth, except that it was colder than a witch's t.....well let's just say it was really cold at 5:30 am with no APU.

Back in DTW - I head to Bob Evans to grab a decent breakfast (where I actually fall asleep waiting on my food), then I take a nap in my car(because I'm too cheap to pay for a hotel today since I have another trip tonight), then to Borders to hang out for a while and catch up on some reading and now I'm sitting at Panera having lunch and bumming the free wireless internet while I bore you with this thread and wonder if I'm going to have a job next week. Since my laptop battery is about dead, I'll probably head to the mall in a few minutes to walk around and mingle with the retired, unemployed, and other slackers that have nothing better to do during the day. Maybe another short nap before I go back to the airport for my deadhead to Green Bay, 7 hours of ground time, and a 0600 launch back to DTW tomorrow morning.

Don't just sit there drooling folks, Pinnacle is still hiring so if you hurry and get your application in, you too can be living the American Dream!! :D

(I wish I could remember the phrase for 'seize the day' but it escapes me at the moment)

Not if you are on reserve at your pilot domicile. They do not provide hotels in their own domicile. You can get a discount rate but it still costs you.

How long till you can hold a line?

Because of you people are staring at me and wondering why I'm rolling around on the floor laughing histerically! :D I will venture a W.A.G. that it will be several years before I hold a line....although I can't complain - I knew what I was getting into...I elected to bid for upgrade when I was very junior while the senior FO's were bypassing it so they could hold better schedules, when the end of the growth became apparent, they all started bidding for the upgrade so everyone that has upgraded(and continues to upgrade) are all senior to me to I'll be a permanent reserve biatch....but I figger' being a reserve Capt is better than being a line holding FO!

I thought the airline you fly for pays for your hotel room?

Fly is exactly right - if you're in domicile you get nadda' - the cheapest around here is $35 including tax which isn't bad but I'm going to need at least 2 this week so I didn't want to spend the $$$ on one today. The utilization of reserve pilots here has been so high that I was almost always out on a trip when I was at work so getting a hotel room the few nights a month I needed it was actually more economical than a crashpad but my flying the past 2 months has slowed down dramatically and the hotel route is no longer the cheapest - guess I'm gonna' break down and get into a crashpad.

I hate crashpads.

yeah the regional life can be interesting. I just finished a 5-day pairing, each with 13 hour duty days beginning at 5:14am and around 6 hours of flying time. The captain I was flying with was awesome and we ended up having fun... But geewhillickers, after the 3rd day the stuff that spouts out of your mouth can be pretty interesting.

"roger center, direct Williamson with the seven groves"
(translation: direct williamsport via the selingsgrove arrival")

Why am I still awake at 10:20pm? New espresso machine.

On the flipside, commuted in today after six days off, did three legs (EWR-STL-EWR-YOW), and now am spending 36 hours off in Ottawa. Don't leave until Sunday at 11:00am. This means tomorrow I'm going to head down the street and partake in the festivities for the Senators game, only after getting up, having a nice breakfast, working out, and possibly catching up on some e-mails that are overdue.

It isn't always bad! I mean, it can be real bad sometimes, but it also can be pretty good. There are some positives to this job still.

Part 135 can be up and down as well. I flew almost 600 hours last year, which is pretty darn good considering how much additional time I get to log in the pilot's lounge between flights. :)

I had to fly on Christmas day, but I've only had one day of flying since then - almost two weeks off, with pay, is O.K. in my book. :)

No doubt. Crashpads suck. Unless you're very young and don't mind college dorms-style communal living.

My FO this morning offered to get me a spot in his pad - it's a "great" pad according to him....it's only $105 a month - it's a hotel pad with only 6 people sharing a 2 bed hotel room. No thanks.

Jason, Buy an old trashed out RV. Or buy a truck and tow a "prowler" camper behind ya. You can switch bases and always have a crashpad.

I knew a guy who put up a fairly sizeable tent at MKG that lived in it while sitting reserve. I have no idea what he did during the winter though.

I'm desperately awaiting a reply because I was thinking about living in a hangar next year until I get out of school (Aug-Dec)... have some space heaters to heat it up (industrial sized)... the only problem is shower and bathrooms... But bathrooms are easier to deal with than shower.

I was looking at the RV ads just yesterday. I want something small enough that I can drive around while I'm here so I can take my car home. Maybe a conversion van. Maybe I can even find a river to park it next to!
