AGI/AGII

But why? Just curious.
I understand one for the gold seal, but both throws that reason out.
I did mine because each was a college credit.

I am somewhat confused on this. I currently have my FOI written complete and I am currently studying for the FIA written. I have no CFI license, only single engine commercial. If I take the AGI written, fill out the 8710, go to the FSDO, can I go ahead and have my AGI certificate before obtaining my CFI initial license? I have no real reason for doing this, I would just like to know.

Yep...you can absolutely be a ground instructor without yet being a CFI. I just did it as I hurt myself in the middle of my CFI training. I just took my FOI, BGI, AGI, and IGI exam prints to the FSDO, did some 8710age, and they gave me a ground instructor temp cert with advanced and instrument instruction privileges on the spot.

Yes but with AGI/IGI certificate only you cannot teach any ground. You need either a real CFI or additional endorsements to do that.

One reason is the CFI DPE will not be required to ask questions on the subject areas missed on the FOI written.

Wrong:

61.215

(3) A recommendation for a knowledge test required for the issuance of a sport pilot certificate, recreational pilot certificate, or private pilot certificate under this part.

(b) A person who holds an advanced ground instructor rating is authorized to provide:

(1) Ground training on the aeronautical knowledge areas required for the issuance of any certificate or rating under this part except for the aeronautical knowledge areas required for an instrument rating.

(2) The ground training required for any flight review except for the training required for an instrument rating.

(3) A recommendation for a knowledge test required for the issuance of any certificate or rating under this part except for an instrument rating.

(c) A person who holds an instrument ground instructor rating is authorized to provide:

(1) Ground training in the aeronautical knowledge areas required for the issuance of an instrument rating under this part;

(2) Ground training required for an instrument proficiency check; and

(3) A recommendation for a knowledge test required for the issuance of an instrument rating under this part.

(d) A person who holds a ground instructor certificate is authorized, within the limitations of the ratings on the ground instructor certificate, to endorse the logbook or other training record of a person to whom the holder has provided the training or recommendation specified in paragraphs (a) through (c) of this section.

Good. Now check 61.217.
Not hard to overcome. I demonstrated a ground lesson to the chief pilot, and he gave me a 61.217(d) sign-off to conduct ground instruction. Now, I fill in on our ground-school when needed. It's been great for my CFI study as I get real questions from the young pups.

FOI knowledge is definately part of the PTS for CFI, so I fully expect to be grilled on all facets of the FOI during my CFI oral even though I have a piece of ground instructor plastic.

True, but one way or another you cannot instruct with you BGI/AGI/IGI without that endorsement (or a CFI ticket)

I got my AGI before the CFI ride and still the FOI stuff took approximately 2.5 hours so yes expect to be grilled. The inspector went over all the missed questions as well.

Thanks a lot for all of the input guys. That definitely cleared up all the questions I had!
