Age Question

Hey all,

I did a search and could not find this question or answer anywhere so here it goes....

Im 28 right now and will turn 29 in Oct. When or if another PUBNAT comes out and with the current time frames when would I call it quits on hoping to get in?

What point in the application/training process does one need to be at before turning 31? application/TOL/PEPC/FOL/finished with OKC?

On a side note would I have enough time to go the CTI route? I have my B.S. in Aviation Science and my Commercial single/multi.
-If I go the CTI what point do I have to be though before Im 31? Is it the same as the OTS route?

Thanks!

I believe you need to have your TOL in hand before the age of 31.

If a new PUBNAT comes out this year, you'll probably have to wait almost a year before you find out if you'll get a TOL.

I applied for PUBNAT5 10 months ago and wont go to my PEPC til next month - almost 11 months in total before I get my TOL at the PEPC, hopefully.

So you do have some time, not much. Pray they'll have a PUBNAT8 this year. Rumors has it there will be one in July but who knows.

There is a CTI announcement currently out but expires in Sept. I doubt you can finish it in 3-4 months. But they might have more future CTI announcement out there.

Good luck to you :)

CTI programs take about 2 years...so no...you don't have enough time to finish...and apply...and get your TOL

CTI take 2-3 years if you don't already HAVE a BA...especially a BA in aviation. I have a friend that went to CTI school in Cali. He had his BA in aviation and he was able to finish up the CTI stuff in 1 semester! You might want to check into that!

Really one semester!.....I do have my BA in aviation science with my commercial ASEL/AMEL. Do you know what school? Anyone know if these courses can be online or are they in classroom training only?

It is classroom training. I can't remember the name of the school though. I will ask him next time I see him. It was in Southern California. You might be able to find it by Googling it.

Thats for that info! Although I dont think I can attend SoCal for school maybe I can look for something closer to Western NY like Long Island or Pittsburg.

I thought I would ask if online training would be avalible for ATC but I guess the schools would require Labs and hands on training.

I might just have to wait to see if another OTS PUBNAT comes out.

as long as they don't do away with the pubnat's and you're lucky enough to get selected it will probably take almost a year from the PUBNAT anouncement to get your TOL where your age is locked in so it's not impossible in your case. I got my TOL 6 months before my 31st. b-day.

and... I have heard a few FAA staff say that if they really like someone who is pushing the age limit they'll work extra hard to get them in. So start touring some towers & talking to facility managers and make BFF's!

and of course... then you get to wait some more for a class date in OKC.

I have a friend and a high school class mate who both work in the tower here and has told me the number and name of the tower manager. I was going to wait to see if another PUBNAT came before I contaced him about a tour and meeting. Do you think I should get intouch anyhow just to make my presence known and let him know I very interested in working there?

Also I heard theres a spot on the application for the PUBNAT for refrences, is this true? If so does it help?

There was when my husband applied. We are lucky enough to know a guy that has a good rep at ZLC and my husband used him as a reference. We both honestly think that is the reason he was picked up by ZLC.

Where is the place to put someone as a reference? Is it on the PUBNAT?
I have asked my friend in the tower if he would be willing to be a reference for me and he would. Hope that might help is another PUBNAT comes out.

You'll give plenty of references on your e-QIP. They won't contact anyone you know until they do a security investigation.

Does anyone know where to find a copy of the form they send to your references? I'm just wondering what's on it.

Someone posted a sample of it a while back, but I don't know where to find it. Plus, I got to see it when a few of my personal references came to me and were like "WTF IS THIS?" :)

The personal reference pretty much asks about your personality, and for a brief paragraph stating the type of person you are (ex. dependable, always punctual, or whatever other descriptive terms a personal reference would use). I also think it has a few multiple choice (agree, somewhat agree, disagree, somewhat disagree) questions on it about you as well, but don't put your money on that. It's all basic info. They'll do the REAL digging behind the scenes.

The employer reference just asks if you're eligible for re-hire, whether you had any issues on the job (tardiness, employee/employer conflicts, etc.), I believe, along with the same personality questions that the personal reference asked.

All in all, it's nothing too bad, however it does state at the top of the form that you applied for an Air Traffic Control Specialist position.

I would try to do a tour asap. I toured 4 different facilities with the main intention of meeting the tower mgrs., getting my name out to them and trying to make a good impression. I figured touring all 4 facilities near me would help my odds. If you have a friend at a facility(and they are liked at the facility) this could be to your advantage in lots of ways.

This is from the 2009 ATC hiring plan....
Does anyone know if you have to have your TOL in hand by 30 or 31? What is this refering to by saying age 30? Does it mean you can get your TOL anytime during the 30th year?

Applicants must also meet the following requirements:
Complete three years of progressively responsible work experience, or a full four-year course • of study leading to a bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of work experience and college credits.
Be a U.S. citizen.•
Be able to speak English clearly enough to be understood over radios, intercoms and similar • communications equipment.
The maximum entry age is 30.

You can get your TOL at 11:59:59pm, 1 second before you turn 31, and be fine.
