Age for ATP License

Does anyone think they will at least lower the age for the ATP license? I mean if you have the 1500 you should be able to get an ATP license. Sorry but I think the 23 year old rule does not have any applicability to anything.

Don't know what to tell you. I put my "stuff" in to upgrade at 23 and the economy fell on it's face. I thought I was ready. Looking back I have ZERO reservations on an age 23 requirement to be an airline CA.

Yeah because you mature so rapidly at 23... :sarcasm:

I honestly don't see much of a difference between 21 and 23

It is was it is.

If you're desperate to get an ICAO ATP below 23, you might want to go for one in Europe (or, well, any other ICAO signatory state). The typical age is 21.

The whole point of the ATP is to allow someone to act as PIC of an airliner. Keeping that in mind, I don't think that a minimum age of 23 is really asking for too much.

At 23 I thought I was "ready". Was I? Sure, I would have passed upgrade and learned along the way. I most likely would even meet the mins for the likes of FDX, but that's hypothetical. Hindsight is I was "senior" flying with the "senior CA's" for a solid 2 years. I learned what "to do" an what not "to do". Was it worth it? Financially- maybe!? QOL- Heck NO! When I went after a couple thousand hours with the "senior guys" I have been accused of being "laid back" but (so far) it's been a "been there, done that" situation. It saved my marriage and propelled my experience. I know you want to be a 23 year old CA, but I will say (as a 25 year old) I have only flown with 1 guy younger to me- an he's a RSV FO. DON'T RUSH SUCCESS!!!

How did you get started so young? Did you skip college?

I know a bunch of people that probably shouldve waited until they were 30 to get a captain upgrade.

Maturity is hard to reach for some people. Others obtain it much earlier.

Im just saying, alot of people need those low 20s to find themselves.

Started flying in High School and instructed while I went through College for the 4 year degree. By taking summer classes I was able to shave a year off and get hired at 21.

That's what I am doing now. I am 1 year ahead myself in school and have two years left towards my bachelors and it will probably take three years to get the BA done since I am going to an intense flight instructing gig. I'll lose that year I was ahead but it will be worth it. I guess more than likely instead of flying for the airlines I will be hopefully 135 if there is still hiring. Too bad there is no exception is this rule for experience, whether it be having ATP minimums and not having the license.

The ICAO age is 21. Not sure why there's a magic age of 23 over here. Personally, I think it should be ruled illegal age discrimination. If you meet the other requirements, you should be able to get the ticket regardless of age, imo. Maturity is another matter and should be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. This is coming from someone who started flying at 15 but had nowhere near 1500 hours at 21 or 23, so if you're able to achieve that by such an early age, then more power to you.

It's possible to take your ATP ride before you are 23 but the certificate cannot be issued until you are actually 23.

problem is when you employ thousands of people you cannot deal with maturity on a case by case basis.

There are the rare few who are actually mature enough to be captain of an airliner before 23 years old (CK would be an example) but the other 99.5% of us needed some more growing up.

I'm 23 and if you gave me the position, I would jump on it like white on rice, but I'd be lying to you if I said I was mature enough to be responsible for that machine and those people.

When I was 21-23 I thought the same way. 2 decades later I have a much different opinion. I think the traveling public would be happier with the age being raised rather than lowered. So would I. I wouldn't trust my family with a 23 yr old version of myself.
