Late to the fight...
For what it's worth, Vipers takeoff in mil power somewhat regularly in air to air configured jets (1 or fewer external tanks, no bombs, racks, pods). Unfortunately, BFM sorties are pretty rare nowadays, so depending on the unit/training/tasking, we're probably AB.
The Thunderbirds have a phenomenal thrust to weight ratio with clean block 52s, so I'm sure 99% of their AB take offs are for show.
