After PPL Solo....what comes next??

Hey guys! I will be going on my solo flight this weekend provided the weather here in Dallas cooporates!

Now, I was curious about a few things in my post solo training.

First, will I begin cross-country training right away or will I learn something else first? And, if the wet rate for a C-172 is 83 per hour how much can I expect to pay per flight during the cross country phase? I need to know so I can get my finances straight!

Second....provided everything goes the way it should how many flights would you say are left before I go on my checkride?

There is a reason for me knowing all of this as I am on a schedule issue. You see, I go back to being a full time University student at the end of August. I took this semester off so I could work full time and pay for training. If I was to take another semester off not only would my parents throw a fit...it would delay my education way too much.

So I need to know if I can finish my PPL by mid July or mid August at the latest. So help me out...please!

Thanks in advance!

You'll have a coule flights before your XCs start. You'll be learning Short Field and Soft Field Take offs and Landings, then an intro to night flight. Then the XCs begin.

Figure about 2-4 hours per XC. Depending if you use the Min 50 NM rule or head off further for more interesting XCs.

You'll be doing at least 2 with your CFI, then get cut loose to do your Solo XCs. Your long XC will come in around the 4-5 hour mark.

After your XCs, you'll have about 8-10 more hours of training to polish everything up and to meet all the Aeronautical Expirience requirements.

SO, there shouldn't be a problem finishing up in the summer... heck, if you fly alot, you can finish before the end of the month

Depends. More than likely the cross country stuff will start to slowly be worked into the stuff you're already learning. Of course, if you're Part 61, it will totally depend on the student, so it's gonna depend on what your instructor feels you need work in.

Take the time it's gonna take to fly from point A to point B and back, multiply that by $83.

It really depends on where you fly for your X/C. Are there airports exactly 50 nm away or do you need to go a bit further? For my x/cs in FL, we had to go to Ocala, since that was the closest airport to 50 nm (it's roughtly 60 nm from ORL), and that (depending on winds, traffic, etc) was about 2.7-3.0 round trip. Keep in mind you'll have to do a couple of dual cross countries, too. So you'll have to factor in the CFI price in those.

How many hours do you have now? How well do you know the stuff you've already been taught? Are you performing close to PTS standards already? What else needs to be covered (hood time, x/cs, total time, ground school, written, etc)? How often do you fly a week? It's VERY difficult to gauge a ballpark figure even WITH the answer to those questions. I'd concentrate more on learning the material and getting the procedures and maneuvers down instead of saying "When can I take my checkride?"

The key here is how often do you fly? The more often you fly, the easier that goal will be. I'd say if you fly 2-3 times a week from now till then, you should be okay.

Lol. I just sent him an IM asking the same.

Thanks for the replys! That was quick!

Ok, yes I forgot to mention how often I fly...that would help to know!

I fly 2 times every other week and once the other weeks. So for example this weekend I have 2 flights then next weekend I will have 1 flight. I keep up that pattern every week.

As far as my knowledge of the material...it is top notch. Every free time I have is spent reading the books, watching the DVDs, and practicing pattern work and navigation on FS9, complete with CH Rudder pedals!

I fly out of Monarch air from Addison airport in North Dallas. I believe our Cross countries are flown to Paris,TX or Waco,TX. If I am not mistaken the flight time to Paris is roughly an hour, so a round trip would be 2 hours....

So, with my schedule let me know how you think my training may go!

Oh, e sim...sou Brasileiro!

That was funny!

But anyways, with the amount of flights I have per week and the stage in my flight training I am at....assuming all goes well for me in each flight what would a good estimate be for how many flights I have left before my checkride?

I know it seems like I am in a big hurry to finish my PPL but it is not like that at all. In reality I take my training very seriously and focus on each lesson at a time. However I do have that time limit approaching, that is why I am curious as to how much I have left. Otherwise it wouldn't matter.

Thank you for all your help!

It depends - you have your cross country flights next these are typically longer flights, however I found this portion went very quickly.

My suggestion do not be in a hurry to get it down, make a plan to get to your cross country solo - think about them next.

The reality is training for your PPL is the funniest training enjoy it!

Yeah, on your schedule, I think you can finish by August.

But enjoy the XCs. Then you're really flying. You're using the airplane to get from point a to point b. You're not just tooling around the pattern anymore.

I loved those XCs and still do!

You fly real close to me. I'm just about 15 NE of you at McKinney (TKI). Those locations to go to for your cross countries sound good, I've been to both, just try not to let the scenery put you to sleep whichever path you choose. Anyways, good luck with everything!

Yeah, one thing I've noticed about Texas.....plenty of places to land if you lose an engine.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, down here all we get is a big ocean and a bunch of condo's.

Great replys! Yeah, I am looking forward to the XCs too..finally!

mavsfflife, you are really close to me. I practice touch and gos up at TKI all the time! There is a controller there, don't know his name, who is a real wisecrack! Once I was practicing short field landings and came in a little wide on one of them, and he radioed in...."That's not short field! Go around and do it again!" All while laughing!

I noticed there are others who fly here in the area to...so all of you can share in my anger over our weather last weekend! Low clouds and visibility all weekend which delayed my solo until this Saturday...provided the weather doesn't go bad again

And I agree...there are PLENTY of places to land in case of an emergency around here, especially up there north of McKinney in the Aero Country/Prosper/Pilot Point area. Nothing but open fields dotted with little farms and criss-crossed by country roads!

Great...plays right into people's sterotypes about Texas!

BTW: Brian...I LOVE your avatar man! Last year I was in Rio and saw the Sao Paulo leaving port for Ops in the Atlantic...complete with Skyhawks on deck! Superb site!
