I received my AFQT/ASVAB score today and got a crappy 54. My instructor said it is pretty good but I ain't buying it. What's the best job I could get in the mil with a 54?

A 54 is pretty good, its above average. I know in the USMC anything above a 60-something usually qualifies you for anything. But you dont really want to look at the AFQT score very hard, the ones that choose your jobs are the line scores(GT, EL, CL etc..) Each branch has a different set of scores and a differnt way of scoring those scores.(You should have got a sheet of paper that has all of the different scores and there respective branches on it.) For example, all the branches have a score called the General Technical(GT) score if you score the test the way the Army does you GT is going to be lower than say if your looking at the Air Force's GT score. Both mean the same thing its just that they may use different subtest's to compute that score. If you want to know what jobs you qualify for with your scores you can go over to usmilitary.about.com and look for enlisted job descriptions. They tell you what scores are required for a job and a short description of it. Remember though, a recruiter is going to have the most up-to-date information on any job so double check everything with them if you are serious about joining the military.
 
Thanks. I had two friends score really high on it, one a 95 and another a 94. They are both wanting to go into mil aviation so I guess they are ahead of the game. The auto shop section really killed it for me. Surprisingly, I got almost all of the eletronics questions right.
 
Is the ASVAB and ASQT the same thing? I took the ASVAB in high school and supposedly did well on it, but I didn't see the military in my future, I'd rather pay my way through flight training:( . What do you get for "a high score?" :)

I'd consider somewhere in the 90s to be a high score.
 
That's good to know in case I change my mind. I just found my ASVAB test from high school, and I got a 6 on the career section, and a 93 on the ASQT. Nice to have other options I guess.
 
BTW, you don't need an ASVAB score to be an officer (unless things have changed in the last decade or so).

Are you looking to enlist or get a commission? What job are you interested in? I'm active duty enlisted Air Force. I choose a career in air traffic control because that was the next best thing to flying! If you have any questions, i'd be more than happy to help...also I'm pretty sure there are other on JC that would help you out!

Well, you'd be wrong! ;)

You;d be amazed to learn what that score qualifies you to do. I scored a 64 back in 93, and that qualified me to be pretty much anything except for a linguist (like I was really rushing for that gig . . . ). I already knew I wanted to be an infantryman, though, and I chose to grow up throwing grenades, carrying machine guns and doing my best to steal the girls from the squidlies and puddle-jumpers.:buck: That same score enabled me to become an Intermediate Level Helicopter Powerplant Mechanic (turbine engine tech).

If you're planning on being an officer, that score is moot anyway.
 
Your score also depends on what you want to do. Also, we are talking about the AFOQT right? From my brief flirtation with the military I learned that: If you want to fly and you're in ROTC then you can get by with a lower score. If you want to get into OTS after college however, your score needs to be significantly higher. From what I understand flying in the reserves or guard operates on a whole 'nother system (did you work in the unit, who did you know, do they need pilots.) I just got a bit of information a while ago that might be useful to someone interested, aparently San Juan Puerto Rico is one of the "easier" places to get a job flying C-130s. If I could do it again I'd enlist in the Guard out of High School and try to get a job flying that way (probably wouldn't have all this school/flying debt either.)

Take the test again...talk to a recruiter.

Dude - I too grew up throwing hand grenades and stealing women from the squiddlies - right now I am flying F/A-18s for the Marines - beats working for a living/throwing hand grenades. Recommend that you retake the test, and talk to a recruiter. They sell study manuals for the ASVAB/AFQT and just about everyother standardized test. On a side note - remember a recruiters' job is to get you standing on the little yellow foot prints - he aint your buddy/friend/pal - I don't care how many cheeseburgers he buys you. Once you get on the bus/airplane for basic training/boot camp you aren't his problem anymore. Not saying you can't be nice to the guy/gal, but always remember it is a professional relationship and you need to make sure you are ending up in a win-win situation.

If you want, drop me line with your scores. I have a buddy of mine that is the CO of Recruiting Station Portland OR. I'll run your test scores past him and see what they can get you in the Marine Corps.

Can you take the ASVAB more than once? I know I took it my sophomore year and scored in the 90's, but would I be able to take it again?
