AFOQT

If I can piggy back on the question, would you recommend taking the AFOQT with a unit you plan to rush?

No, it makes no difference where you take the test. The more squares you have filled before you start "rushing the unit", the more prepared you'll look.

x2 on that. I had the AFOQT and TBAS done before I ever walked into the unit I was applying to. When they said, "Let us know what your scores are and we'll let you know if we're interested" and I handed them the paperwork, I got raised eyebrows and a "Wow, uh...our board is in November." Showing some motivation goes a long way!

Thanks for the input! I'm working through the Arco book now and hoping to take it after the first of the year. There's a guard unit I am interested in with a March deadline so hoping to have it all squared away by then.

Definitely take your time and prepare with those books; it made a big difference for me. The first time I took it, my scores sucked and my unit wouldn't even talk to you if you scored less than 75 on pilot. Second time I was much better prepared.
